The Ebola virus doesn’t need to spill back. It abides in its reservoir host, and awaits its next opportunity. A virus can’t climb out of a bat or a monkey and fly off in search of human prey. It can only spill over. If humans left the reservoir host alone — not hunting it, not capturing it, not eating it, not exporting it live, not disturbing its forest habitat — the virus wouldn’t re-emerge in humans. It would remain where it is, harming no one. But of course that’s not what happens. And when viruses spill, they often spill into us, because the human population is such a big, busy target.

"Heads up birders, I would not be surprised if the biggest bird migration night of the year happens over the next 2 nights. Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight. That is a lot, but the pattern could not be better for migratory birds. A massive area of high pressure will turn the low level winds from the northeast to the southwest across most of the US. The last time we had anything similar to this in the fall was early October last year when a record 1.25 billion birds were in flight. I doubt we get to that level, but I suspect the number will top 500 million especially Monday night which looks to be the bigger of the two nights. You can help by turning off those outdoor lights on big migration nights, and the next 2 nights is about as big as it gets."

They disinvented the VCR. You might think that the reason we don't have VCRs anymore is because VCRs were supplanted by DVDs, PVRs and streaming, but that's not the case. They had it in for the VCR from the very start, and they never stopped trying to kill it. Eventually, they succeeded. 1/

As someone who struggles with body positivity, something about this is quite lovely From Say The Thing by Kami Orange

I once posed nude for a local art class who advertised for figure drawing models. I'd never been naked in what felt like public before and was a little nervous about being able to hold still for the length of time they requested.

Settled comfortably on a divan, I listened to music and the soft scrape of pencils on canvas for 30 min-utes. At the first break, I walked around to see how the drawings were progressing.

One artist remarked, "I love drawing bodies like yours! They're so interesting! You're art!" as he gestured to the shadows and highlights on my fat rolls that he'd sketched.

As I sat for the next 30 minutes, nude in a room full of people looking intently at my body, I considered what he'd said. I'd previously tried the body positivity technique of declaring to myself, "My body is beautiful!" but it felt too far from my current belief of "My body is a problem."

The idea that my body is interesting? That I'm art?
My body is art?

That was the bridge I needed! After that day, I've used "my body is art" as a mantra whenever I feel less than stellar about my lumps, bumps, moles, acne, and stray hairs.

Art doesn't have to be pretty or perfect. It can be grotesque or boring or maddening. As long as it makes you feel an emotion, it's art. And that's my body. I am art.

Fun fact: the only surgeries performed on trans youth in the US are breast reductions, which are far more common for cisgender youth (by, like 50 times), and are perfectly legal for both male and females (if they're cisgender). ~ 250 per year for trans youth, and ~12,500 for others.

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.
