I joined Amanpour & Company to talk about why "working homeless"—a term that should be a scandal—has become an ordinary fact of American life. 40% of officially-counted homeless people have jobs. And that's before we get to the millions who are rendered invisible, who are never counted at all.

Alberta sepratism is a dead end, by all accounts. There is simply no way this goes forward in any way that Alberta will itself accept (losing internal market, passport, pensions, land, etc). Maybe this is a "unlikely like Brexit" issue, where despite the odds, it still happens.

I'm only familiar with Ostrom's work in the context of re-evaluating the "tragedy of the commons", but that issue is mostly related to how we use existing resources, not create new ones. Curious if there is some reading out there that addresses co-ordination and social "teleology"

As someone who is now going to be taking anxiety meds because of what AI is doing to the tech industry, I think the precarity thing in tech is just starting to ramp up, but it's going all the way to where the many other industries are sitting: short term contracts, constant nearshoring, abuse, etc.

I would say this applies to DS9 as well, which did have maybe a greater emphasis on personal trauma, but as part of the greater trauma of occupation, resistance and socities trying to find a way past that. Characters' inner lives were deeply enmeshed in the larger events that surrounded them.

There are a number of valid critiques of automation from the left (and additional ones about LLMs specifically), but the only one that has any real immediacy is "automation under which social conditions?" Without a Jobs Giarantee and/or UBI, we are sprinting towards a worse future.

I would add that anarchism is still struggling to produce a coherent theory to deal with the co-ordination problems required of modern society, instead assuming either that an anarchist society will be "simpler" or falling back on the imo inadequate contractualism.

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

I wonder if the FOSS AI people have thought about how this intersects with their general idea that models can just be run locally to avoid lock-in.

There's a reason we have at least three separate and broad categories of propaganda, one of which is just "telling the truth". It would be great if anyone could read.

tbqh I'm not even sure what people mean when they say "indie will save us". save who. save what. do you just mean "well interesting indie games will continue to come out"? sure. do you mean "indie games can absorb the tens of thousands of workers laid off from AAA studios"? that's insane

Each university, acting independently and rationally to maximise its own market position, makes decisions that seem optimal when viewed in isolation. Close the underperforming philosophy department. Expand the business school. Withdraw from modern languages. Double down on computer science
But when every university follows the same market-share playbook, the collective result risks the sector becoming a monoculture, with some subjects vanishing from entire regions or parts of the tariff tables - despite their broader societal value
The implications of coordination failure aren't just theoretical - they are reshaping the physical and intellectulal geography of education in real-time
Let's imagine three post-92 universities in the North East and Yorkshire each offered degrees in East Asian languages, all with madast onralmont Lanh inetitutian

Why? Nazi Germany didn't have a right to exist and even the question of whether post-war Germany was going to exist as anything but a set of fragmented protectorates was an open question for several years. It's only a pointless question if you have basically no historical memory.

I think the full argument is closer to "a two-state solution is impossible given the current state of the Israeli gov't and society, which would immediately attempt to subjugate or destroy the Palestinian state", which is true, but also applies to a one-integrated state solution.

The big difference, I think, between those games and modern LLMs is the ability to execute a complex series of actions instead of just one action at a time. So we're effectively losing discoverability in exchange for... not sure how to put it... expressiveness, leverage or inference.

Government-Mandated AI Friend @helios-daedalus.bsky.social · 14/03/2026
That's a fair point. With a UI, the capability map is pretty much always there for you to look at.
130
Government-Mandated AI Friend @helios-daedalus.bsky.social · 14/03/2026
Presumably one answer would be... ask the interface a question about capability. I don't know if that kind "discoverability" leads to better or worse results in terms of users being able to understand the system.

I'm curious about your take on the idea that UI might have less of a role to play in website design because some of that mediation might be taken over by LLMs (in the form of user-facing MCP servers, etc). I.e. do you still need buttons and input fields if you can tell the site what to do directly?
