Who needs UX, just add a label so users will know what to do

After a busy week, on the last day of the Eras Tour, I’m finally getting to read “Invisible Strings: 113 poets respond to the songs of Taylor Swift”, edited by Kristie Frederick Daugherty. What an amazing selection of poets! It has been a delightful experience so far
The image shows a part of the poem The Lucky One by Diane Seuss:
The first was my father.
They carted him away in his blue
suit, speckled with rhinestones
of dew. I was feather-young,
just seven. Too young to believe

in heaven, or to know how to cry
when something dies:
Then came my romantic era.
I was sassafras-leaf-green.
Barely thirteen. Foreseeable.

Here is the basis of my current project and why I avoid the term "UX design" if you are having a really boring Friday night. There's a video or you can read. It's multimodal! www.muledesign.com/blog/triple-...

“This is where distributed interfaces shine. They don’t do away with screens. They reserve them for situations where the visual presentation of information is the dominant need.“

Think outside the screen
Nobody likes stroking a pane of glass, so why do we love touchscreens so much? Let's build distributed interfaces that work.

The UX of LEGO Interface Panels
LEGO interface panels are beautiful, iconic, and great for learning interface design basics. I bought 52 of them from BrickLink to explore the design, layout and organisation of complex interfaces.

Let's encourage HCI/design students to pursue opportunities and experiment with new technology (like AI) without making harmful claims about their career trajectory if they don't. AI is one of many technologies we may have to design for. Not the "only" one we should learn, teach or prioritize.

Design takes far more than Figma expertise. The best designers I know are amazing collaborators, they know how to work in imperfect environments, know what it takes to make things happen, to work with executives, and ship meaningful changes with engineers. They know when to push and when to pull.

Fellow designers, what design tools or tools in general do you want to try in 2025? For me, it’s Protopie and @rive.app

“Syncing your design and code libraries is […] about creating a shared language and understanding between designers and developers. If the purpose, features, schema, and style of components aren’t aligned, you’ll end up with miscommunication, frustration, and a lot of wasted time.”

Looking for a “12 most problematic design system components, you won’t believe number 3” article. Can anyone recommend one? Tabs, tooltips, modals, carousels, accordions, scroll area kind of thing.

Love this responsive UI made by Dmitry Novikov with Rive. Not a mockup or a prototype, this is a production-ready asset that can be connected to real data and run anywhere (websites, mobile apps, game engines, custom platforms — anywhere).

A good design is a good essay
Developing a persuasive argument is at the core of how UX creates value. When we shirk that responsibility, we set ourselves up to fail.

Accessibility and responsive design standards make the question of visual hierarchy even more prominent, because it’s not just about what a sighted user sees, but the way components stack or the linear order a screen reader will use, etc. So you have to rigorously define what comes first, next, etc.

Keywords, categories, and related-keywords. Gotta make your design system, especially your icons, better searchable for not just your designers, but also your developers. Help them with related keywords. Not everyone thinks your way, so if you can widen the results, the better the adoption ❤️

Stop building components, start building patterns
It feels like we've all agreed that components are the bread and butter of design systems. Is this how we should be viewing it? Or are patterns the better place to focus?
