I suspect the QOL experience in Omaha depends heavily on one's minoritized status.

O....ma....ha......! I've never been to Oakland. Downtown Omaha is pretty nice though. Similar to Denver because of the same type of Western-style street grid.

Facebook back in 2021 temporarily turned off the “drive people insane” setting and it completely changed what people were seeing. They turned it back on when engagement dipped by like 1 percent.

I LOVED wild rice as a kid. I always wanted to eat pure wild rice, not mixed with brown rice. But as a kid I never had the opportunity. I'm not sure it would actually be as good as I imagined.

This sounds like a similar story to the Cocoliztli epidemics that devastated Mexico in the 16th century. Nobody knows what the disease actually was.

The small number of Democrats going soft on trans rights are wrong on principle, wrong on policy, and wrong on politics. They should get some backbone and stand for us. Cis gays must stand with our trans siblings both because it is the right thing to do and because the bigots will come for us next.

I mean I say this a hundred times a day but the only way that the past was meaningfully better than now is that middle class people could attain homeownership in large urban areas and they didn't spend 16 hours a day getting their brain blasted with The Personal Discontent Machine.

Like if someone lied on their paperwork - fine them, jail them for fraud even. But there should not exist a process for making them a non-citizen

This will be broadly unpopular with the electorate but I don’t think involuntary denaturalization should ever occur in a liberal society. Once you take your oath of citizenship you should forever be a citizen.

The East Bay Times editorial against Measure RTM is so bad I had to refute it. Bad argument after inaccurate statement and then completely ignoring AC Transit's existence because it disproves their core argument that cuts over service improves transit. darrellowens.substack.com/p/voting-aga...

Another reason why people need to try at least one summer growing field crops by hand. It's great to get in tune with your ancestors and get a tiny taste of what their daily life was like - and appreciate the hard work it took for them to build our society!

Unfortunately I think a lot of voters are entirely unaware of the old age benefits thing. I asked someone I know what he thought the government's biggest spending program was. He said: "SNAP."

I think people's memory of the 1950s is entirely shaped by the TV shows representing aspirational lifestyles in the 1950s, and not by the reality. It's as if people were to think that Only Murders in the Building represented the average lifestyle of people living in NYC. Or Modern Family in LA.

We’re living through a campaign of discrimination comparable to many historical abuses. It’s shocking to me how many people are capable of identifying state-sanctioned bigotry when they encounter it in a history book, but cannot recognize it at all when they encounter it in a newspaper.

Also it’s time for the news to stop treating this administration’s racist war against Somalis as “Trump being Trump.” They targeted Minneapolis because they hate an ethnic group here, and now they’re targeting the most prominent political figure in that group with thinly rationalized state violence.

Well - actually, I'm not sure if I can say *always*. I know this to be the case for the 18th- and 19th-century United States, and of course for 16th-century (New) Spain, but I do not know if has been the case in *all* other societies. One might assume, though.

I think "liberal erasure" is actually a big problem when talking about the past. Unless you read widely from past authors, you may not realize that there have always been kind-hearted people who fight back against the obvious abuses of their day.

Georgia, Louisiana, and North Carolina offer juicy tax incentives to entice film and television production crews to set up shop in their states. When Robyn Murphy tries to lure them to Baltimore, she pitches something new: politics.
The CEO of Create Baltimore, the city’s arts council, reminds studio heads and producers that some of their cast and crew are not welcome in other states warring with “woke” and politics important to the diverse creatives working on these productions.
Experts say financial incentives typically are the determining factor in where productions are shot, but some artists say they’re receptive to a pitch about a locale’s values.
Murphy focuses on what Maryland offers: It’s immigrant-friendly, has access to gender-affirming care, and supports Black leadership and historically Black colleges and universities.

“In Maryland, we are very clear, and in Baltimore, we are very clear that we don’t just want to profit off of artistry,” she said, “but we want to be a place where art is protected and artists are protected.”
Murphy likened it to the Jim Crow era when Black performers were expected to entertain or athletes who were expected to play in arenas but were not allowed to be guests there.
“What’s happening in our country is the modern version of that,” she said. “We are setting conditions that people are not allowed to live as artists in spaces, but you still want the art.
The delivery sometimes catches the decision-makers off-guard, Murphy said.
Director Chris Robinson, who wound up staying in the Baltimore area for three months after an initial visit, is now going to build his production company in the Charm City region instead of Atlanta.

“I want to be in this place. I want to bring something to it that I can live in my creative freedom,” he said.

Lowkey I think a lot of cities should explore making their top surface transit corridors into transit malls. At the very least they should look into the many priority strategies in @chittimarco.bsky.social's Transit Priority Atlas.

The 350m stretch of King between Simcoe and John is a rare portion of the streetcar network without private vehicles, curbside parking, signalised intersections, special track work, car stops, or other operating restrictions. This allows cars to frequently reach the maximum road speed of 50 km/h.

If it had no park-and-ride facilities and was anchored by car-free or nearly-car-free TOD sites, it might end up with a very very high transit mode share and relatively low additional car traffic on the islands. Maybe.

The first claim is always strange because revitalizing struggling communities tends to require (1) repurposing of existing space for new uses and (2) new housing construction to replace the uninhabitable housing stock. ("Cheap old houses" are usually decayed!)

I might be wrong though! But I grew up middle class and can't remember hearing anything negative said about walkability or density per se. Nobody had any experience with it except vacations. Thus it had none of the associations with crime or poverty that one might find adjacent to a declining city.

Having grown up there, I also rather believe that there isn't much of an anti-urban bias. The suburb-par-excellence of the region - Ankeny - has built a great suburban downtown, and urbanism feels almost like a luxurious foreign import rather than something scary. There is no local big city to fear.

The people to ask would be Confluence, Bolton & Menk, and the Iowa State University planning department. The comprehensive plans for basically all the DSM metro cities are made by an orbit including these people.
