And it seems like when individuals retire, entire research programs die with them. I haven't seen any useful fire research out of NIST since Richard Bukowski retired, for example. Robert Wyly's retirement clearly also was a huge blow to their plumbing research.

My photo shows a silver shell-shaped container with an eight-armed octopus in relief at the centre of the lid. The arms of the octopus curl outwards across the ridges of the shell’s surface. This ornate shell container has a hinged lid and may once have been a cosmetic container . It is displayed on a clear stand in a museum case. Dimensions: 13.3 × 13.2 × 3 cm. It is part of the Silver Treasure from Paternò, Sicily, a hoard discovered in 1909, consisting of tableware and toiletries. Dated 4th-3rd century BC.

Russia is not my enemy. After Moscow is properly occupied by the EU/NATO/Ukraine and after the Russian state is de-Putinized and democratized, I can see Russia thrive inside the EU, even if some former officers who served in Ukraine participate in it, even if it's led by annoying Navalnyites.

Yeah, the state of civics education in high school is bad, and not just in the US. Israeli teachers complain about same a lot, and it's a mandatory subject on the end-of-high-school test, the Bagrut, too. I just don't think required history courses at university are going to fix that.
