Aww, that'll be Monty's last regular GW in 2 weeks' time. I'm guessing we might see him if there are winter specials though. Have a good weekend #gardenersworld chums!

This a million times. People of colour being dragged on to debate maniacs about imaginary labels & race science is an abomination. proper ‘how German are you’ Nazi shit Note that people like me with white migrant parentage never asked to defend our identity Englishness. Is. A. Made. Up. Thing

Also, in addition to the wonderful slow living ethos, I read today that we import about 70% of our apples in the UK now. 70%! How wonderful to grow your own apples so you're not adding to those food miles. #gardenersworld

Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.

This is a wake up call post written by my chum Tom Ingall. When farmers start saying its not worth growing a crop because of #ClimateChange, that's the start of a slippery slope to high food prices, changed menus, loss of national food resilience and much more. #farming #resilience #potatoes #food

I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al

For today's #OnlineArtExchange, let's wander into the golden haze of John Atkinson Grimshaw's "Autumn Regrets" (1882). A masterpiece where Victorian stillness fades into a brilliant canopy of amber leaves, capturing that quiet, bittersweet feeling of seasons turning. @artukdotorg.bsky.social
A Victorian oil painting by John Atkinson Grimshaw titled "Autumn Regrets". A woman dressed in an elegant, long black Victorian dress reclines on a stone bench in a park. The ground is completely covered with fallen orange and brown autumn leaves. Above her, a dense canopy of chestnut trees with golden, amber, and yellow leaves filters a soft, misty light. The atmosphere is quiet, serene, and melancholic.

Me, part way through looking at several hundred photos of Gannets taken at @rspb.bsky.social Bempton Cliffs today. #Birds #BirdPhotography #UKWildlife #ECK 🌿
Photo of the head and the upper part of the nack of a Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus) who is almost looking towards us and slightly to our right. The head is rounded, wider than it is tall, and a pale yellowish-brown in colour, with that colour extending down the sides of the otherwise white neck. The eyes, on either side of the base of the upper part of the beak, are pale grey with black pupils and thick, sky-blue rims. The beak, though longish, is foreshortened in this view as the Gannet is looking almost directly at us. It is battleship grey in colour, with black lines around the base, and a black line on each side of the upper part of the bill, running from the base, almost to the hooked tip.

We have loads of urban badgers these days. There was one that kept breaking into my last garden - I had to repair the fence about 4 times! They're really destructive. Luckily the one here seems to prefer my neighbour's garden! 🤞🏼#gardenersworld

Autumn poem just dropped.
[The poem has been written in the shape of a deciduous tree with letters (or ‘leaves’) missing from the text]:

comm n pr ble whe writin p ems
in the shape of decid o s trees
is t at once t ere ar ives
the fir t sti rings of he new aut mn breeze,
he oems will begi to shake hemselves ge tly
ntil their letters loos n like leaves,
an they d start to float down
then

[The missing letters from the tree have landed on the last line to form the phrase]

turntomushuponthegroun

[The final ‘d’ is floating down to complete the phrase.]

I really hate the framing of these stories as "an AI agent broke out and hacked something." No, an inadequate sandbox meant that a powerful and unpredictable computer program was set loose on the open internet by the company that designed it. The agency isn't with the "AI agent", it's with the firm

Dear councils, 97% of UK meadows are gone. So if you have wildflowers like ox-eye daisies on roadverges and in public spaces, don't spray them with weedkiller or over-mow them. Let's give pollinating insects like bees and butterflies a chance 🐝
