The best way is to go to your local bookstore, give them the ISBN number for my book: 9798881610579 and ask them to include it in their next order! This is good for me too, because it signals to more international book sellers to carry my book ♥️

Like, I was joking with Kelly about how a high percent of posts in any ai imagegen is anime girls with giant boobs. Mosts artists wouldn't do that, out of a sense of, what, integrity? Taste? But actually the audience has wanted precisely that all along.

I was reading someone who put into words a way to discern ai writing (and which also makes AI writing annoying): that it tries to end every paragraph with a mic drop. I had mentally categorized this as "writes like a teenager trying to show off" but this is much more specific.

Don't get me wrong--I think AI will have effects. I just think it's a sideshow. The main issue is that major platforms controlled by a handful of companies get all the revenue. AI is likely producing a modest crowding-out problem, but if you don't get the money either way, what does it matter?

What's going on is, people see Musk is a bad human, and extrapolate to " ... therefore everything his companies do is bad", then conflate morally-bad with technically-bad. Not one but two reasoning errors in one handy basket!

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

I really don't know how a lot of artists are making it anymore. If they are. A lot of the old revenue structures have crumbled. Getting supporters on patreon is surely harder in a high inflation time. Presumably a lot of the old gig work is now getting eaten by ai.

Reading Higginbotham's very comprehensive book "Midnight in Chernobyl" and it's good but hard. Particularly poignant is a scene where an American doctor arrives, and the Soviets are distressed that he's not bringing any super-tech that will save all the people with radiation sickness.

that's my jam
a shell pipeline in a terminal compiling a regex, where the regex was written with syntax that would be pathological when executed backtracking style. stages of the pipeline show:
1. constructing an NFA from the regex (it goes through an AST first of course, but we don't see that). the NFA here contains loops within loops, where the exit from the loop is ambiguous: given an input of 'b' we could be iterating around an inner or an outer loop, but we don't know which until there's a following character 'a' or not.
2. NFA -> minimal DFA. this is where the ambiguity is resolved, and every state has outgoing edges that are deterministic
3. the same DFA output to a text format
4. the text format piped into the same tool, a command line interface for libfsm, showing a constructed AST
5. the AST rendered out to pcre regex syntax. the end result here now contains just one loop, with the contents rearranged such that it wouldn't be pathological given a backtracking implementation

One Internet problem, which you can't entirely blame corporate platforms for is that humans are stupid about attention. And, worse, over the last 20 years, all the big tricks have been discovered. So, even if tomorrow facebook said "from now on artists get a cut of ad rev" it'd still be bad.

I suspect a lot of people will read this as "it's gonna be bad," but tbh I'm so extremely cynical about social media and general enshittification (in the original specific sense of using network power to degrade consumer experience) that I don't see this as obviously being worse?
