I know there's a lot going on right now, but can we talk about Sega for a second?

When something deeply, instructively stupid happens—and when that something is tied up in a supposedly populist party's utter ignorance about famous and popular sports teams—David Roth is there.

Thinking about the "your pet's name is just a jumping-off point for all the stuff you'll actually call them" post Just 5 months in, and I've exhausted all permutations of "Squiggle," so I've ascended to variations on "Little Guy." Mister Guy. Commander Guy. Uncle Guy. Officer Guy. Prince Guy.

Thinking about ruining my life by trying to write a long-form essay on how fiction transitioned from an opportunity to comment on the real world into a way to escape it, and is now finally being relied upon as a reality replacement.

This might actually be cool, but in a world where AI is transforming the worlds of crime, terrorism and nonconsensual pornography, this hits the ear like he's stanning hard for Roman Polanski.

I mean it's weird enough to go, "We can prove that you were in Atlanta, therefore you were trying to meet with the prosecution in a case you were involved in." But then to be told, "Oh, no, he was provably not in Atlanta at all," and just go, "Well, yeah. But still…" This guy is just saying things.

Gonna start framing it as a "back in my day" to get the boomers on board, but it used to be that if a company couldn't make enough money to pay their workers, they had to go out of business.

There is a kind of person that appears to really believe that poor people are only ever poor because they made some series of mistakes. Like, "what reason could there be for having no money, except that you've spent it too quickly?" But that is the Question that Must Not Be Asked.

There is something ineffably, exquisitely 90s about Swanboy. Like when they used to make movies about just regular people doing stuff. There's an effortlessness to it that makes you think, "you know what? It WOULD be fucked up if street dogs used a condom."

I have a set of Bluetooth headphones, where if you hold down a certain button, it pulls up the phone's AI assistant. And if you KEEP holding it down, it turns the headphones off. There's a metaphor here, somewhere.

Years of gotcha style debate have taken the teeth out of this sort of thing, but the Republican party should be shamed constantly for how much they seem to hate personal freedom in practice.

One of my favorite scenes in the new season of Slow Horses has this dude—a well-established Guy Who Sucks—cornering his nemesis at a fancy dinner and absolutely HOUSING polysyllabic SAT words.
The character Peter Judd from Slow Horses played by Samuel West, bearded and besuited, wearing a characteristic shit-eating grin. West plays this dude so well. He AUDIBLY sucks every time he enters a room. He never speaks a single sentence that a decent person would put their name on.

In my freshman year of college, I took a literacy class, and one of my favorite facts I learned is that the word "revolución" contains all of the vowel sounds in Spanish, which made it an incredible teaching tool for mass literacy. Just something I've been thinking about for no reason.

I think it's really cool what's happening to Ed Sheeran because 1. It's the best illustration yet of an "apolitical" entertainer deciding that an arena owner should have authority over him, which is an inherently political stance, and 2. It might make him go away.

so like… exceptions are a thing. They could have had this be like, a footnote in somebody's file "Exception granted since the offense was due to coercion." This implies that there are SO MANY PEOPLE who are 1. trafficked into committing bestiality that then 2. want and deserve to become FBI agents

I was *this close* to reflexively changing my profile pic to the bird logo as a prank, but then I remembered how much I have always hated twitter! This is really funny, though, because I did not realize that "tweet" was ever trademarked, and X losing access to these immediately reduces its value.

I want to be clear on my personal stance regarding AI writing. If you are working on something and you hit a wall, and you go to something like ChatGPT to have it work out happens next, the act you are engaged with is no longer "writing." You are now "being entertained."

Season 4 Episode 2 of Ted Lasso is about how the decision of what to put into the world should be made NOT based on whether you think that thing will succeed, but based on whether you think that thing should exist.

My new car has one of those fucked-up iPads instead of a dashboard, and it comes with a voice assistant, but every SINGLE time I've have asked for anything, it can't help. After a week, I asked "What CAN you do?" And it said I should have it tell me a joke. Why did we ever crawl out of the ocean?

This is kind of blowing my mind, because in Actual Reality, the Melania film was not a success by any reasonable metric. Very few people in the world wanted it to exist, but the people who wanted it also happen to be in charge of which things exist, so here we go. www.avclub.com/melania-docu...
