This has happened almost daily of late: i'm driving a little over the speed limit—i.e., with traffic—then somebody revvs up behind me, tailgaits for a minute, then roars past me on the shoulder (like, in a 2-lane hwy construction zone) or through a turn-only lane. Weird levels of asshole aggression.

There have been plenty of tough years recently, lord knows, but this one stands out. Nearly everyone i know is struggling—mostly with health disasters (to say nothing of the general awfulness of society). 2026 is corroding us all.

Pretty color progression
Indoor plants' leaves at bottom and left edge foreground; trees in the distance beyond them—light green at the bottom, orange behind & above those, then dark green pines above and behind those. A bit of bright white-blue sky at top of frame.

Can't turn around without seeing a MAGA ad about how those obscene Dems like trans people. Surely there's a point where even R voters gag on this crap? I mean, surely?

4.5 years after we moved in the cf bulb in the front yard light finally burned out. Trying to replace it, & apparently cf's are out? It's all LEDs, which are mostly fine but bad for this use (they're bright enough to trigger the photoreceptor that turns the light on at transitional times, so

A moment's silence for an old one that finally lost the fight.
Log sections from a large tree that was cut down, sittinf at the curb awaiting disposal. Street in the foreground, a green yard behind.

Publicly telling Iran to do what we want or we'll destroy the country is, incredibly, something our government has already done repeatedly this year. It has also spectacularly failed to produced the desired result. Yet, once again . . . They have no moves but bullying, posturing, and threats.

We’re not scared. These things produce such a phenomenal amount of traffic that our systems keep going down if we don’t aggressively block bots. It’s pure self defense. And yes, it’s breaking everything.

Sure do appreciate, right now as i have to drive back & forth to Michigan to help my injured daughter, that rich assholes are driving the price of gas up 20 cents a day for no good reason

The tough thing about being in a totally unfamiliar, high-stakes situation is the shadowboxing. Have to try to make good decisions but unable exactly to assess benefit & risk, so you end up arguing with imaginary propositions.

A good day to contemplate the fact that the 5th-century BCE Athenians would sentence to death an aristocratic general who exceeded his mandate and had success doing so, because of the threat such a person posed to their democracy

It’s unfortunate that mathematics is a discipline that AI can work on (if you throw millions of dollars at it) and then get headlines in the NYT or whatever. I wonder what it will take for people to understand that the journey really is the important part. mathandai.org

We talk about regulating the tech, which is an excellent idea, but we need to be talking more about how we get & keep the *people*, the wealthy edgelords who go on about "the singularity" & blithely project they'll kill millions or billions, out of power.

Indulging my seasonal fondness for The Cat From Outer Space (late summer makes me think of the late 1970s). I will not be taking questions.

Why are people here attacking other people for having "twitter refugee" in their bios? Metaphorical/hyperbolic uses of "refugee" have been commonplace my whole life. Used a lot in sportswriting in the '80s & '90s, for a player who changed teams, among many other places. Get a grip, people.

Watched the Mandalorian movie and it was . . . fine? Bland, inoffensive. The hero's a good guy. The puppet is cute. The CGI is mostly pretty. It's a big video game cut scene—so, basically the same as the series. People say the action isn't good, but i don't much care about that anyway. It's fine.

For a few years i wrote occasional poetry. It felt appropriate, although i have no idea to what. I've been trying to write more the past few months, and i can't. Can't manage meter, rhythm, rhyme schemes, themes, allegory—nothing. That phase is over, apparently. Odd.

Assuming you're like me, so the concept of maintenance somewhat eludes you & you left even 40 behind a ways back: It's not so bad. Stuff breaks down; you fix what you can & accept you've lost things you always took for granted, like sleeping or being able to get out of chairs

The fact that these race-science arguments are present, even popular, even among academics, despite being defeated over & over again decades ago, makes one despair of rational argument. People simply prefer bigotry to reason, and find hatred more attractive than truth.

The animals here hate my plants. Deer eat my catawbas, maples, and locusts. They & squirrels ravage the sunflowers. Chipmunks polish off the smaller blossoms. And just now a squirrel jumped off the porch roof & crushed my cactus. I don't imagine it enjoyed it, but that doesn't help my dragonfruit 🤬

A little foretaste of Fall is blowing in right this minute—storms (more?jeez!), but with dropping temps, then three days of sunny days with highs in the mid-70s and overnight lows well into the 50s. Heaven, for August :)

Yeah. We need a term for this sort of (nonfiction!) horror, parallel to "body horror," the kind of stuff that *causes* existential dread. Reality horror? Social horror? Something like that

A small place along a darkening road
A white church with a dark roof and a light over the entrance, seen from across a field and a rural highway. There are telephone lines and poles in the foreground, thick trees behind the church. It is near dusk; a colorful cumulus cloud fills the lower half of the darkening sky above.

Microsoft made a version of Office for the Mac, but it was the single most curséd piece of packaged software ever offered to the market. Merely waving the Mac Office floppy around a workplace would cause files to spontaneously go corrupt on random PCs in the vicinity. 75/
