I will be eternally grateful to have been born in a literate culture where literacy was valued and expected and I still had the time, attention, and freedom to develop a literacy practice. Understanding context, inference, vocabulary, perspective, affect — all powerful, useful skills and values.

"And I believe that reading and writing are the most nourishing forms of meditation anyone has so far found. "By reading the writings of the most interesting minds in history, we meditate with our own minds and theirs as well. "This to me is a miracle.” ― Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

There’s no A.I. “literacy”. There is only power, to either rebuild or eradicate commonly shared knowledge production. They haz it. Remains to be seen if we haz some too.

I can't recommend @nbedera.bsky.social's book 'On the Wrong Side' enough. I interviewed her in 2024, this part really stuck with me. Rapists often don't just not face consequences but reap benefits bc the school is so sorry for even investigating them/afraid of seeming 'biased':

I think its important to understand the campus sexual assault crisis is way worse than you think. universities suspend just 1/12,400 students each year for sexual misconduct & expel 1/22,900. once you read title ix administrators in their own words, you get a sense why that is:

Unclear whether ‘reading’ is going to go the way of physical exertion or nutrition. In one future, people go and do the literary equivalent of lifting weights and taking selfies of their pecs; in another future, they take literary ‘diet supplements’ and nag their children to finish their reading

My theory is that if you take an impulsive leader loosely tethered to reality, replace the policymaking process with sycophants and strivers who tell him how brilliant and popular he is, and cede every institutional check on his power, a bunch of ill-advised and inexplicable stuff will happen.

yes, different people may need more accommodations and more interventions in some cases. but if you deny people what seem like minor or unimportant accommodations, they can and will in fact get worse over time in ways which can be life altering (not in a good way.)

Screenshot of an article that reads: “This is what distinguishes hyperpolitics from the mass democracy of the mid-zoth century. Symbolic political gestures are now commonplace, but paid membership of organisations and parties has plummeted. The left has failed to find a replacement for trade unions as a basis for collective action in civil society. Political movements are easy to join, and just as easy to leave. The chasm between politics and policy widens, as the former becomes a fruitless stream of outrage with little or no practical consequence.

Samuel Palmer's 'The Rising of the Lark,' (c1839) was inspired by lines from L’Allegro (1645) by the poet John Milton. ‘To hear the lark begin his flight; And, singing, startle the dull night, From his watch-tower in the skies,Till the dappled dawn doth rise.'

One of the most insidious mechanisms of rape culture is the way we treat a rapist experiencing *literally any consequences at all* as "ruining their lives." Not getting an extremely competitive job that literally 100 people have is not only not a death sentence-- it's not a sentence. At all.

Intimate partner violence and sexual assault usually co-occur. In fact, men who hurt their significant others are among the most likely to commit *all* kinds of violence. The idea that men can mistreat women in private and be trusted in public is absurd.
