By virtue of their needed expertise, engineers possess real power to determine the structure of much of everyday life To not understand that power within its political and historical context is to reduce oneself to a blind tool for use by whoever is willing to pay

A systematic, critical understanding of history, especially the long history of technically skilled people either being used by elites or being blinded by their own high modernist ideology to do incredible harm, should in my opinion be a requirement of any technocratic profession

Articles like this aren't for people in serious debt (who probably can't afford WaPo, let alone to "free up money"). Articles like this are for people who want to feel better about getting by while others struggle. Reassuring them--the strugglers would be fine if they made smart choices money-wise.

Integrated assessment models make contact w physics, hilarity ensues: It's one thing to say "IAM negative emissions are unrealistic" - but needing to produce largest global carbon capture facility every ~36hrs from today through 2050 to hit lower end of net zero goals does put some mustard on it.
From https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/2753-3751/ae987b

Achieving gigaton rates of sequestration in 2050 as most energy system models suggest would require building 250 Gorgon-scale sequestration projects every year between now and 2050, based on realized injection rates of about 0.4 Mt y−1. Compounded over a 25 year buildout to 2050, this yields ∼2.5 Gt CO2 y−1 of cumulative operating capacity, consistent with the lower end of net-zero sequestration targets. Realistic planning across diverse geologies must assume modest injectivities of 0.2–0.5 Mt y−1, consistent with a majority of on-going projects (Ringrose and Meckel 2019). At this rate, achieving even the lower end of projected sequestration—1 Gt y−1 by 2050—would require drilling thousands of wells each year until 2050. For comparison, the total number of active drilling rigs (onshore plus offshore) in the US at the end of June 2026 was 581 (Hughes 2025). The drilling activity alone needed to achieve projected levels of sequestration—2–5 Gt CO2 y−1—would be larger than the entire existing oil and gas industry.

The Prime Minister of Spain: “This climate emergency is exceeding every threshold and scale that scientists have long warned all of Spain and Europe about.” This is the realistic climate discourse the world needs. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/28/w...
"These are difficult hours," Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said
Monday afternoon during a news conference in Castellón, on Spain's eastern coast, where a new fire raged and forced thousands of new evacuations.
In the face of what his government has called the largest fires in the country's history, and after a summer of record-breaking heat waves, he called for a national pact with all Spain's political parties to work together to prevent blazes that he attributed to climate change.
"This climate emergency is exceeding every threshold and scale that scientists have long warned all of Spain and Europe about," he said.

The idea that removing nearly a trillion tons of atmospheric CO2 by 2100 is plausible, but a forcing that gets us to 4C of heating by 2100 is not: this is a symptom of some very, very deep bias that is not at all scientific.

"Can tech save the world?" is the wrong question. The right question is "what kind of world do we want to build?", and then the tech can help us get there. It's the re-invented worldview that the tech gives you access to that matters. The tech needs to support that worldview, not dictate it.

6/ Rather than restructuring economies, we focused on changing behaviour. Rather than transforming energy systems, we added CCS. Rather than staying within carbon budgets, we're relying on CDR to claw back concentrations later. Each step a retreat from causes toward symptoms.

The main point in talking about eugenics as a science isn't to air science's dirty laundry. It's to give scientists who might otherwise be convinced that their empirical findings justify heinous shit on the basis of "that's just the facts" a moment of pause that maybe the science is in fact wrong

1/ Yesterday @wmo-global.bsky.social made Earth's Energy Imbalance a headline #climate indicator for the first time. I think this could be a significant reframing of climate discourse, and it's worth paying close attention to why. 🧵
A staircase diagram with six levels rising from bottom-left to top-right. Each level on the left represents a stage in the causal chain of climate change, connected by a dashed arrow to a corresponding intervention on the right. From bottom to top: Root Drivers (economic system, fossil finance, colonial and historical structures, geopolitics) connects to Transformative System Change (economic restructuring, post-colonial redress, geopolitical shifts); Human Activities (consumption and production patterns) connects to Socio-technical and Behavioural Change (electrification, behaviour change, market incentives); Energy and Land Systems connects to Infrastructure Transition (renewables, grids, land-use redesign); Emissions connects to End-of-pipe Controls (CCS); Atmospheric GHG Concentrations connects to Carbon Dioxide Removal (including NETs); Earth's Energy Imbalance connects to Geoengineering (SRM). A diagonal arrow runs across the full diagram from Structural/Preventative at the bottom-left to Reactive/Compensatory at the top-right.

Puerto Rico hasn't had reliable power in a decade. The grid sends occasional surges through the wires that fry appliances. Electricity rates are among the highest in the entire U.S. Heat waves are getting intense in the summer, and outages mean A/C is no guarantee for an aging population.
