Last time Sim tried to remove the gas ban, @petermeiszner.bsky.social and @lisadominato.bsky.social broke from the other ABC councillors to protect it I hope they show the same courage again, but I suspect they have been mislead by lobbyists and bullied by Sim into supporting his motion 7/

Harrison Johnston @harrisonjohnston.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
The reason Ken Sim wants to remove these regulations has nothing to do with affordability He has many fossil fuel lobbyists who work in his office, advise him and meet with him regularly Fortis BC wants to protect their monopoly and Sim is doing their bidding 6/

There are 13 other municipalities in Metro Vancouver with a population over 30,000 9 of them will not allow fracked gas for space and water heating in new buildings by January 2027 Other municipalities like Victoria, Nanaimo and Saanich also have similar bylaws 5/
171
Harrison Johnston @harrisonjohnston.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
However, that is misleading because the majority of other municipalities in Metro Vancouver have similar bylaws to Vancouver's existing ones If Ken Sim actually cared about aligning Vancouver's regulations with other municipalities, he would support the gas ban 4/
191
Harrison Johnston @harrisonjohnston.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Sim claims to want to "standardize housing-related regulations across municipalities" by aligning Vancouver with "with the baseline provincial Energy Step Code" This would mean removing all limitations on fossil fuel use, allowing fracked gas back into new buildings 3/
161
Harrison Johnston @harrisonjohnston.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
In the best case scenario, Vancouver is already on track to fail to meet their 2030 climate target Fracked gas use for space and water heating in buildings is responsible for almost 60% of emissions in the city If Ken Sim gets his way, the city will fall even further behind 2/

Ken Sim is once again trying to gut Vancouver's climate plan this Wednesday He wants to allow fracked gas for space and water heating in all new buildings After his previous attempt failed, he's now using vague claims and misleading statements to try to get it passed THREAD

Sean Orr is all but certain to run for council instead of mayor, but him getting thousands more views for his announcement than Azaroff’s ultimatum post is an affirmation to COPE supporters that they have their own leverage in these conversations

Yeah the 5+5+5 proposal from COPE already feels like way too many candidates, though I'm assuming that was probably them trying to find a middle ground with OneCity 4+4+4 including mayor seems like the absolute maximum that makes sense

It's way too late in the day for formal votes such as the one proposed by OneCity. Plus, ultimatums sap trust among those you claim to want to work with. And progressive parties will absolutely eat each other's lunches, confusing and alienating voters if they run more candidates than seats.

If Greens, COPE, and OneCity hope to remain relevant, an agreement is needed asap, with a joint statement agreeing to: 1. Endorse whichever progressive mayoral candidate is polling best at the end of July. 2. Run 3 candidates/party, with a 4th candidate going to the mayoral candidate's party.
