Jodrell Bank in Cheshire, the world’s largest steerable dish radio telescope at the time (now the third largest). was switched on in 1957 on this day. Built by Bernard Lovell, it was the only radar device that could track the carrier rocket of the Soviet Union’s Sputnik I.

My 2nd novel 1983 was a joy to write & a disaster to publish, during the death rattle of my ex-publisher, which also almost killed the book. Thankfully it's been republished. I've taken the paywall off this extract in the hope it might help with its resuscitation: tomcox.substack.com/p/the-dont-m...

Edinburgh to London train, v.quiet. Hit Newcastle. Carnage. Every inch of the train filled with drinkers. An older woman in fancy dress, piercing gaze, terrifying. A bloke stood in the aisle vaping heavily. Middle aged couple embracing and weeping. Hit Durham. Everyone gets off. Silence again.

William the Conqueror died on this day 1087 in Rouen, Duchy of Normandy. He had been injured after falling off his horse. Not missed in northern England, where his Harrying of the North - seeking to root out rebels - may have killed 100,000 through starvation.

9 September 1754. William Bligh was born (his birthplace is disputed). His harsh treatment of sailors led to the “Mutiny on the Bounty” in 1789. After being set adrift by the mutineers, Bligh and his loyal men reached Timor alive after a journey of 3,618 nautical miles.

I am often asked “What, if push came to shove, is your favourite stile you have ever climbed over on a walk in the countryside?” and it’s always an easy question to answer, since there can only ever be one winner.
A stile in the middle of a field, surrounded by no fence of hedge, which, when you climb it, takes you to a nicer parallel dimension, containing no algorithms.
