Public mobilization is critical for #conservation & #climate action, but traditional messaging doesn’t reach digital natives. 🤔 How do we meet young people where they actually are? We need a new way: we report on one at the intersection of biodiversity and streaming culture. 🧵 #EcoInnovation 1/5

It takes 0.0001 seconds to realise the AI-bros are lying about "extinction risk" as a marketing trick, given how none of them seem bothered about the deadly fossil fuels they've become obsessed with using to power their data centres.

I've been talking a lot about the disastrous recent loss of American institutional capacity regarding climate science. But today, I'd like to announce something we've been working on, quietly, in the meantime to offer a lifeline to some of those affected. [Thread]

It’s truly astonishing to see how comprehensively the US government is tearing down every part of the system that has made it up until now a world-leading power in science, research, and technological development. The entire world will suffer from this wanton destruction.

We value dogs more than moms. I realized today that if my dog had puppies, it would be considered cruel to separate them any earlier than 8-10 weeks postpartum. But so many moms in America are expected to leave baby and get back to work in just 4 weeks!!

I wonder if this marks a broader shift from participation in content creation to passive content consumption, or if it simply reflects how online social behavior has moved off of legacy social media platforms (“public square”) into group chats (“private salons”)

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I don’t disagree, but I wonder how we can preserve loose ties (joy of learning, social movement formation) as platforms continue to enshittify. Anecdotally, parts of science Twitter shifted to gated Slack/Discord groups after Musk took over. But they lost outside attention and idea sharing.

What we're seeing here is the debasement of scientific currency of papers and citations, in the same way that printing money drives inflation. So how are we supposed to account for the *quality* of evidence in papers or bodies of work when the *quantity* is overwhelming?
