We are at a time where a few online kingdoms are trying to centralize control of attention. Meanwhile, more people can build than ever before and this is the biggest threat to the current kings. Our bet is on the future builders.

App creation on atproto is accelerating, and the constraint on every builder is the same: they need data and users. We have both, and the ability for data and services to be composable and remixable, encouraging collaboration across apps and experiences. We’re solving many pain points for builders, such as moderation, notification delivery, etc. We have 46 million accounts’ worth of social data on the open web, and the userbase we’ve built is disproportionately made up of very online people building the next forms of media, games, communities, and experiences. The Bluesky app is how they find each other and discover what’s happening in other spaces, on- and off-platform.

Our goal has always been to build an open ecosystem: a new generation of apps and experiences built on top of open social data, with an open distribution channel for builders at a moment when platform economics on closed ecosystems are moving against them.

I don't really have an objection to the CEO saying Bluesky is open to all; it's kind of his job to do that. But as others have pointed out, the design of the site means it's harder for trolls/bots/chuds *and also* influencers/hypebeasts to get traction. The "bubble" here is actually normal humans.

I just learned the author of Existential Kink, Carolyn Elliott, has passed away. She helped me understand that when I was suffering it was because I subconsciously enjoyed my suffering. That book has helped me and many of my friends. Very sad 💔

In California, "off-duty cannabis use" is a protected characteristic and if discriminated against is considered workplace harassment, while off-duty alcohol consumption is not listed as a protected characteristic. Maybe this is why they only serve sparkling water at SF parties.

I've worked in Democratic digital comms for a long time and pay attention to campaign metrics across platforms. Increasingly I'm seeing Dems who crosspost on X, Bluesky, and Threads get better engagement on Bluesky even with far fewer followers. Here's @jamestalarico.bsky.social's clip last night:
