Most personality frameworks attempt to describe relatively stable tendencies. But what you actually care about at work is more like: “What will this person do in this specific kind of situation, with these incentives, norms, power dynamics, and constraints?” cutlefish.substack.com/p/tbm-440-th...

I know this'll ruffle feathers but I agree with this Food/Water watch analysis. Diverting renewable energy away from fossil phase-out and climate adaptation and towards melting graphics card to power chatbots is the formal end of moral purpose for clean technology.
Data Centers With Renewables Aren’t the Answer
So all these power plants and “temporary” turbines are raising power prices and polluting our communities. Why don’t we just power data centers with renewables?

Many data center companies are pledging to (eventually) do just that. But even if these pledges weren’t just empty greenwashing promises, powering data centers with clean energy is utterly unrealistic. It also threatens the progress of our already dangerously slow energy transition.

Continuously powering a 1 GW data center would require nearly 20,000 acres of solar panels or 185,000 acres of onshore wind power. We cannot afford to waste the time, space, or money to build renewables for Big Tech’s profit machines.

Already, data center growth is outstripping available renewable energy supply and redirecting renewables from other industries. It’s drawing urgently needed renewables from existing technologies and resources. We need to focus our renewable energy resources toward thos

We'll keep on pointing at this comic by @skutchdraws.bsky.social and @hbomberguy.bsky.social until it's embarrassing for tech bros to call you a luddite for hating AI! More of Failure to Launch in the link bsky.app/profile/iron...
"Curse you spinning jenny, you ruined everything!" A simpleton looking peasant yells as they smash the wooden machine.

The standard narrative goes that LUDDITES were foolish lunatics who, in fear of technology, decided progress was bad, and started hitting it with sticks. (But the truth is entire ways of life were being destroyed.)

Previously, skilled craftsmen were respected for the time and effort it took to do their work. The entire family usit would form a cottage industry - creating something valuable, and command a decent living. But when a machine can work 10 times faster its owner can charge less for the prodcts- craftsmen couldn't compete and were left out of work almost overnight.

And as factories became a fixture of the british landscape, these now unemployed labourers often ended up working the factories that had just destroyed their way of life. Britain was the most prosperous nation in history, factory owners became extremely wealthy and influential. But the people doing the actual work saw almost none of it.

We have ways of "checking whether something fits" that have worked for decades -concept art, placeholders, grayboxing, etc.- and those ways employ creative people instead of burn down forests while enriching a fascist Epstein class. This is not "for the fans" and no spin will make anyone believe it.

What this ended up being was a nice reminder that I could probably just buy a physical book containing the sheet music. If I find a second-hand version, I could probably get sheet music for multiple tracks/songs that were in the film for a similar price to that one song's digital version.

What a scummy, dark pattern-y implementation of a payment window from @musescore.bsky.social. I only spotted this because I thought: - Why am I was getting a discount? - Why is a toggle next to the price? (Just to be clear, I didn't ask for the subscription to be included, it was opt-out)
A screenshot of a payment window from Musescore.com. It shows checkboxes checked for "No commitments", "Secured personal and payment data", "Up to 60% discount on scores, books, and courses" then showing a price of "SEK 23.00 for this score", with a toggle next to it, toggled on.
Underneath the price, in smaller text reads "Get up to 60% discount with PRO+ membership. Charge Today: kr 0. 7-day free then 3 months at kr 639".
Meaning the payment wouldn't just be for the sheet music, but also for signing up for the membership subscription.A screenshot of a payment window from Musescore.com. It shows checkboxes checked for "No commitments", "Secured personal and payment data", but then a red cross on "Up to 60% discount on scores, books, and courses" then showing a price of "SEK 104.00 for this score", with a toggle next to it, toggled off.
Underneath the price, in smaller text reads "No discount. Turn on to switch to apply your 78% discount".

Description:
Sometimes, you're talking with someone and you just seem to click. Other times, you just can't seem to get comfortable: they're standing too close or too far away for comfort, making too much or too little eye contact, touching or not touching you in a way that just doesn't quite feel right. But where do our senses of what feels comfortable in a conversation come from, and how can they be so different from each other?

Dear Shabana, Let's clear some things up around migration and remember we're talking about people's lives.
Dear Shabana,
I notice today that you referred to me in your speech on immigration at the IPPR think tank.
You said: “A party leader should not be on the beaches of France encouraging people to
make a perilous crossing on small boats.”
I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised especially after the hateful Labour campaign in Gorton
and Denton, but this is just the latest in a string of lies peddled by a discredited Government
who intentionally fan the flames of racism and division.
When I went to Calais, I was not there to encourage people to travel to the UK. I was there
to see at first hand the suffering your Government and successive Governments have done
in demonising migrants in a pathetic bid to pander to the base instincts of Reform and the
flawed strategy of Morgan McSweeney.
As you will know, if you even bothered to research my visit instead of taking Reform talking
points, I was there to witness the brutality of families living in tents in freezing temperatures. I
filled water tanks and picked up litter.
What that visit did do is confirm my belief that if we are to smash the boat gangs and stop
the boats, we need to offer safer and managed routes for migrants to come to this country.
Showing compassion as a politician is not a crime. In fact, we need to see much more of it.
It reminded me of a young MP who in October 2015 spent three days in Lesbos helping
migrants fleeing war-torn Syria. She posted videos on X, talked about handing out water and
croissants to refugees and food parcels.
When she returned to the UK, she wrote a very moving piece in the New Statesman. She
said “we have to work with our European partners and create new, safe, and legal routes for
refugees to get to Europe. We cannot abandon them to their fate, left as prey for smugglers
whilst risking death on the seas.”
She said “maybe we can make ourselves feel better by saying no-one is making them get on
the boats. And again, the Home Secretary is not entirely wrong when …
