Where have people died in armed conflicts since the Cold War, and how?
A chart titled "Deaths in armed conflicts since the end of the Cold War" summarizes the number of combatants and civilians who died due to fighting in armed conflicts from 1989 to 2025, with a total of 4.2 million deaths reported. The chart is divided into two sections: deaths by world region and deaths by conflict type.

In the "Deaths in armed conflicts by world region" section, a horizontal bar graph illustrates total deaths from various regions: Africa is shown with 2.1 million deaths, the Middle East with 750 thousand, Asia and Oceania with 590 thousand, Europe with 500 thousand, and the Americas with 250 thousand.

In the "Deaths in armed conflicts by conflict type" section, another horizontal bar graph breaks down deaths into types of conflicts: Intrastate conflicts account for 2.1 million deaths, one-sided violence resulted in 1.3 million deaths, interstate conflicts resulted in 510 thousand deaths, and non-state conflicts show 400 thousand deaths.

Dario Amodei of Anthropic is Very Normal and Can Be Trusted With the Future of Humanity: “…in my case I'd say that I think an adult death is perhaps 2 or 3 times worse than an infant's death.” blog.givewell.org/2010/06/03/m...
GiveWell makes explicit cost effectiveness estimates (based in part on those of the Disease Control Priorities report) for both organizations: ~$545 per infant death averted for Village Reach, and ~$150-750 per death averted for Stop TB. These are roughly comparable, but don't take into account the fact that Stop TB mainly treats adults, while VR mainly treats infants and children. I feel that adults are capable of deeper and more meaningful experiences than are infants, and also deeper connections with other people, so an adult death seems worse to me than an infant death (though both are of course bad). Trying to quantify exactly how much worse is very subjective and can also seem calculating ("how many babies would you kill to save an adult?i, but on a practical level one is forced to make difficult decisions with limited funds, and in my case I'd say that I think an adult death is perhaps 2 or 3 times worse than an infant's death. Thus, adjusted for my personal values, Id say that Stop TB is ~2-3 times more cost-effective than VR, though I understand that others may validly disagree with this subjective assessment.

From Serhii Flash: Recently, Russian Gerbera drones with extra fuel tanks have reportedly flown over Ukrainian territory and returned. They may be conducting signals intelligence. This is unconfirmed; recovered wreckage should be checked for additional onboard equipment.
Recently, there have been observations of Gerbera drones equipped with an additional fuel tank that fly over our territory and then return to the enemy.

Gerbera drones without radio modems or cameras maintain a steady altitude and do not trigger air raid alerts.

Such UAVs may be operating in a signals intelligence (SIGINT) role, collecting electronic information and transmitting it back to the opposing side.

Please pay attention to this pattern of behavior by Gerbera drones. At this point, this is only a hypothesis. If anyone shoots one down and recovers the wreckage, please examine it for the presence of any additional equipment.

Because the truth is, tech doesn't have an image problem. It doesn't have a message problem. It has an intention problem. What's wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasn't successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. What's wrong is that he's trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product that's designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isn't that you haven't told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them.
