On Friday I’m co-running a session on Care & leading a section on what disabled & ND people in scicomm need to thrive. And something I keep thinking about is having the support to tap out. This is me thriving - taking time on the floor of the quiet room at a conference I am Chair of #BIGEvent
Hana’s legs in floral dungarees stretched out on the floor. You can see her name badge which says Hana Ayoob she/her. Ask me about BIG, PPI, SciArt. There is a sticker saying I Make Intros

Good aft/eve/morning wherever you are, spoonie people. May we take of ourselves & each other as much as we're able to today. May we vex fascist shitpickles with our continued existence. May we cherish each other even when society devalues us, & survive like the glorious, intrepid beetles we are 💖
A glorious and intrepid chafer beetle climbing up my finger. It has a chonky black and white body, warm brown wing cases, a slightly fuzzy black head, big black eyes, and the most delightful antennas. The antennas are short with utterfuckingly adorable little fan shaped structures at the ends. There's probably a scientific name for those. I didn't think to look it up though. It also has long spindly legs that end in smol claws, that would be great for tap-dancing.

March was always going to be ALOT. Even before my dad had fairly major surgery scheduled and spent 9 days and counting in hospital. But brighter days feel right on the horizon! He should be out soon & there’s one more major work event which should be a delight. Also here’s some henna 💁🏽‍♀️
Hana’s intricately hennaed hand - piped glossy brown paste forms a floral mandala on the back of the hand hand with vines flowing up the fingers and thumb, and swirly vines coming down on to the wrist area. Hearts and leaves fill the empty areas between the vines.

Steadily coming back to myself, including creatively, after surgery last month and a recovery period which has been tougher than expected in every possible way. Read this line of a Rumi poem and this piece buzzed around in my head incessantly until I made it. This counts as #SciArt right?

More #art done with @lycomorpha.bsky.social paints (possibly with others, I cannot remember). I very much enjoy this style I am developing: tracing paper, marker and ink on top, watercolour behind. I label the bottles as I give them to people.
Two paintings showing coloured backgrounds with transparent glass bottles on top, containing fluids and with labels and banners.
Left one is blue and has a geometric stopper and a luggage tags label, right is red and yellow background, heart shaped, has a tattoo banner label, smoke and a wooden scrolled.

Happy New Year folks!! This is your friendly neighbourhood spoonie reminding you that you don’t have to start anything new today or this month 😴 I wish you the ability to be kind and gentle to yourself this year ❤️
A roughly drawn crow looks at the words ‘nobody expects as much from you as you expect from yourself’ in handwritten pink and Green text. On a green background. There are pink paisley flourishes and a scalloped blue border. A collaged big stack of diffwrent coloured blocks with the text ‘what I expect of myself’ next to a much smaller stack of a few blocks, a star and a heart with ‘what I can achieve’

Day 20 - catching up slowly while my body continues to be a temperamental creature Collage has been my go to medium this year - and collaging in hand made books in particular. There’s something about not starting with a blank canvas! #ArtAdventCalendar
Hand drawn text ‘what are you looking at’ in green and yellow with a hand drawn eye, over a zig zag transfer, some blue printed paper with a little cartoon dog looking over its shoulder. The background is messily painted pink paper and an orange and green page behind is peeking out the side. Hand drawn skulls in profile and from the front on tracing paper overlap hand drawn organic shapes. There are bold flowers dotted around and lots of other textures and patterns in yellows, greys and a hint of green. A yellow plastic heart says ‘sorry’ with a face on it and is layered on top of black part and transfers with other blue and yellow accents around against a pink painted background. Cut out text running down the side of the page says ‘sorry, there’s a fee to pay before we can deliver your item’ and the page has a purple scalloped edge with yellow detail. Other pages peek through the edge. A transfer says ‘follow your art’. The page has a more geometric feel with two big red painted semi circles, cut out organic doodles, different textured paper backgrounds and thick purple marks on top

Day 17 - blue genes & red genes Drawing on lino prints on gelli prints #ArtAdventCalendar #SciArt
Intricate black line drawings of stylised dna with flower and leaf accents - the drawing outlines a subtle peach print of stylised dna over a blue gelli printed background. The whole piece is circular and has been mounted on black card. A single strand of stylised dna is outlined in purple with floral details in yellow and leaves in green. These highlight the design of a subtle peach dna print on an orangey red gelli printed background. The background has masked circles, some of which have geometric drawings within them.

19. Poplar spiral gall in a black poplar leaf stalk. These are twisty little galls caused by an aphid that induces formation of a short corkscrew of distended leaf stem. I'm more familiar with wasp galls on oak. So I I thought this aphid gall was very curious. #SciArt #ArtAdventCalendar
A colour pencil and watercolour drawing of a twisted, lumpy poplar spiral gall in the stem of a poplar leaf. The galls are the result of an aphid, Pemphigus spyrothecae, developing in the leaf stalk of black poplar, Populus nigra. The aphids cause a spiral structure with 2-3 turns to form in a petiole (leaf stalk.) Galls start off green, turning to yellow and red as they mature in August to September.
