Permanent DST would put NJ sunrise past 8am for 2½ months (Thanksgiving into Valentine’s Day), to nearly 8:30am in January. It disrupted business and cost lives when last tried. DST makes us to set alarms an hour earlier than Standard Time. Permanent DST is against federal law.

"Sure, firing squads can be messy, but if we are willing to carry out executions, we should not shield ourselves from the reality that we are shedding human blood. If we...cannot stomach the splatter from an execution carried out by firing squad, then we shouldn’t be carrying out executions at all."
If some states and the federal government wish to
continue carrying out the death penalty, they must turn away
from this misguided path and return to more primitive—and
foolproof—methods of execution. The guillotine is probably
best but seems inconsistent with our national ethos. And the
electric chair, hanging and the gas chamber are each subject
to occasional mishaps. The firing squad strikes me as the
most promising. Eight or ten large-caliber rifle bullets fired
at close range can inflict massive damage, causing instant
death every time. There are plenty of people employed by the
state who can pull the trigger and have the training to aim
true. The weapons and ammunition are bought by the state in
massive quantities for law enforcement purposes, so it would
be impossible to interdict the supply. And nobody can argue
that the weapons are put to a purpose for which they were not
intended: firearms have no purpose other than destroying
their targets. Sure, firing squads can be messy, but if we are
willing to carry out executions, we should not shield
ourselves from the reality that we are shedding human blood.
If we, as a society, cannot stomach the splatter from an
execution carried out by firing squad, then we shouldn’t be
carrying out executions at all.

This is a good illustration of how so much of AI theft isn't indirect (ie, data sucked into a model to train the chatbot) - it's actually **direct** copying, but *enabled* by GenAI. Of course it is: chatbots absolutely suck at creating good, new stuff.

I LOVE how @propublica.org dealt with official comment here, editorially and stylistically.
The Trump administration says none of this is happening.

"DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake." "There are no 'indiscriminate' stops." Allegations of "racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE." "The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force." "ICE does not zip tie or restrain children."

But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

We’re at the “shipping container courts” stage of ICE’s mass expansion of the enforcement system.
Each detention unit would sit on asphalt or concrete behind an office's existing security fence, with a counter for processing people and a separate holding area fitted with a toilet and sink for detainees according to the draft work statement.
The agency also wants a 300-square-foot unit for interviewing people in custody and a 60-square-foot "Virtual Immigration Court Unit" for hearings run by the Executive Office for Immigration Review, the Justice Department agency that operates the immigration courts.
Both must also be designed for their purpose before delivery.
