Straight talk time: Doomerism is BORING. It's the same fantasties rehashed over and over again, just louder each time. And with each iteration it seems that new audiences are being reached, and a new group of people needs to be talked down from unnecessary fear. >>

Did you know that the cells of old animals contain much less mRNA than the cells of young ones? Let me share with you some results from an ongoing project in the lab, where we are finding that a progressive depletion of total mRNA abundance is a crucial part of aging 1/22

As a trainee I am not sure if I’d prefer my work praised by an algorithm and not read by anyone rather than rejected by three actual human beings that think I can do better.

But is the algorithm truly blind? Sure, affiliations were stripped before manual review of the corpus, but it’s hard to believe that there are no tells of where the article is likely going or who wrote it in the text itself.

Part of the issue is the world doesn’t owe you an answer just because you have an interesting question, and I suspect many of our interesting social science questions will go unanswered for a very long time.

As a predominantly inattentive ADHDer, the only way that an LLM could 'help' me write is with cognitive offloading, which is actually a lie, and one that I do not trust. For grammar checking, there is a great open source alternative to Grammarly which is entirely non-LLM called Harper.

Harper checks your writing instantly—fast, lightweight and utterly private—so you can polish every clause without surrendering a single keystroke.

Considering the breakneck speed in which R package developers update their packages (and break previously working code) I will never install anything in my system library again (other than renv itself).

ABSTRACT

Spreadsheets are widely used software tools for data entry, storage, analysis, and visualization. Focusing on the data entry and storage aspects, this article offers practical recommendations for organizing spreadsheet data to reduce errors and ease later analyses. The basic principles are: be consistent, write dates like YYYY-MM-DD, do not leave any cells empty, put just one thing in a cell, organize the data as a single rectangle (with subjects as rows and variables as columns, and with a single header row), create a data dictionary, do not include calculations in the raw data files, do not use font color or highlighting as data, choose good names for things, make backups, use data validation to avoid data entry errors, and save the data in plain text files.

kallisto sped up RNA-seq quantification by 50x. Now another 50x speedup... quantify hundreds of millions of reads in a few seconds. This seems too good to be true. But it's true! Incredible accomplishment by @pmelsted.bsky.social.

In my experience the whole thing is even more unstable based on the exact set of cells that goes in.

It would be interesting to color the cells by Barcode, to see if some are actually changing embedding coordinates more drastically compared to the overall structure. Also interesting would be to subsample the cells prior to each run.

Are the hyperparameters constant, so what we see is just the inherent stochasticity? Asking, while this shows the variability, the overall structure ‚looks‘ still quite constant.

Errors. Call them errors ffs. They're not hallucinations they're not lies. Call them errors. This dumbass personification of a fancy prediction tool is only reinforcing the idea that these things really are intelligent and not just a computer program.
