Everything old is new again. This #SpoliaSunday we're in #Garbatella, built as a working-class suburban quarter of #Rome in the first part of the C20. Atop the Scuola d'Infanzia, the architect Innocenzo Sabbatini set this #sarcophagus. But all is not as it seems. #AncientBluesky 🏺
INNOCENZO SABBATINI.
SARCOPHAGUS OF THE MUSES, 1927-1931, FROM A C2-C3 CE ORIGINAL. CASA DEI BIMBI, GARBATELLA

Here atop a modern building in the working-class district of Garbatella, a surprising sarcophagus looms over the preschool built by the brilliant young architect Innocenzo Sabbatini. It's a sarcophagus of the Muses, a style popular in the C2 and C3, but it's a cast. The school was built around a C16 nucleus, the villa Sergardi, and the two side wings, of Sabbatini's creation, were inventively decorated with classical imagery. The Muses of this sarcophagus weren't chosen by accident: they represent the Fascist regime's desire to give the empire-building spirit back to the Romans, reminding them of the great culture these little children had inherited. The columns on either side and the lintel were meant to evoke the relaxing otium of a Renaissance villa, where the gardens would be full of grape-bearing pergolas. This preschool is a compendium of the only periods the Fascists admired. But it's also beautiful.

For #MosaicMonday, a colossal discovery. This is the Great #Mosaic, which I visited last Tuesday beneath the #BathsofTrajan in #Rome. Though fragmentary, this wall mosaic almost defies comprehension due to its quality and vastness. Let's have a look. #AncientBluesky 🏺🧵
HALL OF THE GREAT MOSAIC, 64-98 CE. MUSEO DELLE TERME DI TRAIANO

A steep downward perspective into a subterranean space beneath heavy brick vaulting. A vast vertical wall dominates the centre, covered in the remains of a monumental mosaic. This hall measures 10 by 15 metres and is 12 metres tall. The ground level has not yet been excavated, and the lower three metres, still buried, were originally faced with marble slabs. At the centre of the long wall, part of a rectangular niche is visible, which must once have contained a statue. It is far too large to be part of a private domus and is built on lands expropriated by Nero for the Domus Aurea, whose main Oppian pavilion is nearby. The gigantic size and high quality of the surviving mosaic suggest an imperial commission, but of what? And was it a Neronian building or a Flavian or Domitianic one? At the very bottom right edge, a modern blue metal railing provides a sense of the staggering scale.

Hello, mother. #SarcophagusSaturday in the #VaticanMuseums brings us this #sarcophagus, famous from the #Renaissance onward, which shows the tragedy of #Orestes as a metaphor for suffering and redemption, with a structural surprise hidden in the #relief. #AncientBluesky 🏺
ORESTES SARCOPHAGUS, C. 140 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS

This marble sarcophagus front depicts the myth of Orestes carved in high relief. The scene shows the hero avenging his father by slaying his mother Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus. Though seemingly too brutal for a tomb, Romans viewed his ultimate absolution as a salvific metaphor for the soul achieving divine purification and peace after earthly suffering. Displayed for centuries in the Aracoeli sacristy before passing to the Barberini and then Clement XIV, its accessible figures deeply influenced Renaissance artists. Beyond the narrative, the composition reveals a sophisticated geometry. The standing figures at the corners and centre act as vertical supports, while the sweeping arcs of drapery and the slumped bodies of the slain form two distinct drooping swags. This underlying structure transforms the scene into a hidden garland sarcophagus, proving how deeply established that rhythmic format was in Roman workshops.

Odd couple. For #ReliefWednesday, a study in divine contrasts in the #VaticanMuseums. #Hercules (virtue and toil) stands beside #Dionysus (ecstasy and leisure). Both gods gaze upward to the right, proving this panel once flanked a massive focal point in a #Roman imperial hall. #AncientBluesky 🏺
ROMAN MARBLE RELIEF OF HERCULES AND DIONYSUS, 140-180 CE. CORTILE DEL BELVEDERE, VATICAN MUSEUMS

This Antonine relief offers two contrasting paths to divine masculinity. On the left, a muscular Hercules is burdened with an absurd number of attributes, flattery hinting this was made for Commodus who identified himself as the demigod. He clutches his club and a cornucopia featuring fruit and a Pointy Thing. An ox head rests at his feet, while a lyre behind him nods to his role as Hercules Musagetes, "leader of the Muses". He cradles his son Telephus, mythically nursed by an accompanying deer, though this protruding infant is likely a zealous C18 restoration. Beside him, a softer Dionysus models divine ecstasy, leaning languidly on a Silenus with a panther at his feet. Both gods share a deliberate gaze upwards and to the right, suggesting that this panel once flanked a massive focal point, perhaps a statue of Commodus, in a grand imperial hall.

Inside Santa Maria della Pietà in Camposanto Teutonico, physical recycling matches the geographical. Post-Vatican II altars here are built entirely of ancient #spolia. This first one rests on a pagan Roman funerary altar, its original identity lost save for a lingering "DIS". #NewAltarWhoDis
ROMAN FUNERARY ALTAR, C1-C2 CE, REPURPOSED AS SPOLIA, CAMPOSANTO TEUTONICO

In a dimly-lit chapel, a heavily-carved ancient Roman marble funerary altar has been adapted as the central pillar for a modern Christian altar table. The marble block, originally a non-Christian monument to the dead, is richly decorated in deep relief with heavy garlands, ribbons, and bucrania. Tragically, the central inscription meant to immortalise the deceased has been completely scoured away, leaving only the opening letters "DIS" visible in the top left corner. A small brass crucifix stands on the plain cloth covering the modern slab above it. It is a wonderfully example of theological and architectural recycling. This altar must have been part of the property of the Camposanto. Perhaps it came from the Vatican Necropolis.

Just down the road at suburban #Torrenuova, a matching early-C4 villa yielded this charming #Borghese leopard. Executed by an African workshop using a geometric checkerboard for spots, its distinctly human grin transforms a lethal predator into a boast of domestic luxury.
HUNT MOSAIC, C. 320-330 CE. GALLERIA BORGHESE

Here we see a close-up of an early C4 Roman floor mosaic from the Torrenuova estate, excavated in 1834. The star of the show is a stylised leopard standing on a thin ground line, looking directly out at the viewer. Rather than bothering with tedious feline anatomy, the North African craftsmen used a wonderfully graphic, almost Klimt-like checkerboard grid of dark and light stone tesserae to indicate its spots. Most delightfully, the cat features an upturned mouth and wide, soulful eyes that give it a distinctly human, slightly smug grin, making it a perfect piece of ancient interior design meant to show off the owner’s geopolitical connections.

For #ReliefWednesday, an imperial motif with a bourgeois twist. This mid-to-late C3 sardonyx cameo from the catacombs of Cyriaca (Vatican Museums) shows Victory inscribing a shield. It’s a middle-class luxury echo of masterpieces like the bronze Victory of Brescia. #AncientBluesky 🏺
CAMEO WITH WINGED VICTORY, 220-300 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS

This oval sardonyx cameo is a multi-layered stone with a white high relief that contrasts beautifully with a mottled, dark reddish-brown background layer. This darker level acts almost like a glowing silhouette, brilliantly limning the edges of the wings, legs, and draped tunic. The cameo depicts a winged Nike facing right in a stiff, flattened profile. Unlike the fluid, organic grace of the famous Hellenistic-inspired bronze Victory of Brescia from the C1, who balances a shield naturally on her knee, this figure is blocky and schematic. She reaches forward to inscribe an upright oval shield perched on a simple pillar. Her hair is gathered in a neat bun, her wings are deeply gouged, and her drapery feels stiffly rendered. Discovered in the catacombs of Cyriaca, this cameo stands as a compelling example of bourgeois, mass-produced commercial luxury, adapting a grand imperial theme for everyday middle-class Roman life.

Those students are teaching all of us a lesson. (Our university's branding is all about "critical thinking" and I am happy to see the values in action. If only our university administration was able to see the irony in the way they push for more AI as an "efficiency tool" in times of budget cuts...)
A student's statement motivating why no generative AI tools were used in a term paper:
"I am personally strongly opposed to the usage of AI in many pursuits, the study of humanities being one. I do not believe the technology to be at a level where it would be able to critically analyze and “think” – it is a mere blender or seemingly fitting answers that often end up being grotesquely incorrect. Aside from its unreliability, usage of generative AI comes at a great cost to all life on earth through the extreme pollution and energy demands of the technology."

#ReliefWednesday offers us a revolutionary #terracotta decoration from about 240 BCE, now in the @MNR_museo and recently at the #CapitolineMuseums. It has a #Nike in a #quadriga, horses fanning outward, and crushing the figure of a #giant. Conquered #Greece conquers #Rome. #AncientBluesky 🏺
TERRACOTTA APPLIQUE WITH NIKE AND QUADRIGA, C. 240 BCE. MUSEO NAZIONALE ROMANO

This applique was found in a dig on the Cælian hill under via S. Stefano Rotondo, in a tomb. Here we see a curved plaque with holes at the back, to attach it to the neck of a giant urn. Bursting out from it in high relief is a quadriga pulled by four galloping horses, all with traces of paint. In the chariot, leaning forward as she is pulled by the impatient horses' invisible reins, is Nike or Victory, and under her chariot is a Giant, turning his head to the left as he dies under her wheels. This pathos came with the conquest of Magna Græcia, and the arrival in Rome of coroplasts, clay-workers, from Apulia and Sicily, c. 250 BCE. In that moment, Rome was no longer just a regional Latin power, but had not yet become the massive, cynical, marble-clad empire of the late Republic. It represented a brief, brilliant window of artistic synthesis: southern Greek energy bursting out of a Republican Roman tomb.

IVORY PYX WITH THE MYTH OF ACTAEON, 500-525 CE. MUSEI NAZIONALI DEL BARGELLO, FLORENCE

This ivory cosmetics container is the diameter of an elephant tusk. It's in surprisingly good condition though it's lost its lid, and the bronze latch is medieval, perhaps Sicilian-Arab work of the C12. This side shows the hunter Actaeon being attacked and killed by his own hounds, doomed for having glimpsed the goddess Diana bathing in a stream. The bathing scene is on the other side. The style of the carving suggests it was made in Alexandria in Egypt, an important centre for ivory carving in late antiquity: the scene is carved crudely in the round but details are made with lines. Here we see the very classical nude figure of Actaeon among some bushes, brought to his knees by his three dogs, who are gnawing him without enthusiasm. The eyes of all the figures are drilled and once contained dark inlay.

Advocacy Alert: Speak Up for Chaco Canyon
Tomorrow (April 7) is the final day to comment on a proposal that would revoke protections for over 330,000 acres surrounding Chaco Culture National Historial Park.
These lands preserve more than 1000 years of history and include over 4000 archaeological and culture sites now at risk from mineral leasing.
The AIA strongly opposes this proposal and is deeply concerned about the threat it poses to heritage sites of enduring important to descendant communities and the broader public.
