Reading Bayeux Tapestry exhibition scandal of BM reminded me of my huge disappointment in Russian Museum this year. I know how it feels to buy a ticket way in advance to see some certain thing, to come from one end of the world, and to go home empty handed. I feel you brothers and sisters.🫂🫂🫂

Another cool find for #FossilFriday: 66 Mya, a theropod dinosaur munched on a toothed diving bird, and we know it because its feathers were preserved in the dino's 💩 #PaleoSky ⚒️🧪🦕
While some dinosaurs are thought to have had ‘fuzzy’ or ‘downy’ feathers (shown in this illustration as the yellow spikes on a Nanotyrannus’ neck), ancient birds (such as the one in the Nanotyrannus’ mouth) were more likely to have had feathers that look similar to the birds of today. These fragments from a Roman villa in Spain are not from a mosaic but from a fresco. If you look closely you’ll see a grid of lines, many following the contour of the figures, much as tesserae do on mosaics. This trompe-l’oeil technique simulates mosaics. 1/ 🏺 1st-2nd c. Museo de Málaga 📸 me
Fragment of a fresco depicting part of a human face, mostly the eyes. Thin lines form a grid pattern, simulating the edges of tesserae.Fresco fragment showing a naked torso of a woman, her legs and pubic area covered in a red himation (cloak). Her right hand carries a basket laden with fruit, which look like giant globes of grapes. Grapevine leaves appear in the background. A Dionysian scene. The faux tesserae grid lines follow the curves of his garment and body.Fresco fragment with the torso of perhaps a god with golden skin, a red himation flowing outwards and partially covering his or her legs. She's wiser than her age and this sometimes scares me. She sees the hypocrisies, the controversies, the mistakes of authority figures (which, in her age, mean teachers) and confronts them. And she's a feminist. Already! All of this would make me proud elsewhere. But this is Turkey.😖

You're no Adonis / Having you gone is the best. For #SarcophagusSaturday, a look at this stunning late-C3 BCE #Etruscan terracotta cinerary urn from #Tuscania. It depicts a high-relief sculpture of the dying #Adonis. But was the deceased really such a catch? #AncientBluesky 🏺
TERRACOTTA CINERARY URN FROM TUSCANIA, LATE C3 BCE. VATICAN MUSEUMS

This spectacular polychrome terracotta cinerary urn depicts Adonis dying on a draped couch, a mortal wound visible on his left thigh, while a hunting dog licks its own wound at the base. It reflects a Hellenistic trend in Tuscania where workshops used moulds to produce these urns in series. Portraying the deceased as a dying hero was highly fashionable. The ashes inside might have belonged to a youth who died tragically young, but Etruscan funerary art frequently heroicised the dead, so it could equally hold the remains of an older man projecting an idealised divinised image for eternity. Despite its theatrical beauty and striking pigments, this urn was never meant for public display. It was destined for a tomb, only to be seen by the gods, the ancestors and living relatives during subsequent burials.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.
