It comes as a shock to a lot of people that Iranians dont want their country forcibly dismantled and pushed into permanent civil war. The Islamic Republic persists because, at least for now, it prevents that fate.

bzzt wrong. classic move from corrupt bodies to agree to oversight they find tolerable to prevent stronger oversight they'd find intolerable. she gives the game away in telling a bald-faced fucking lie while advocating for a "panel" to enforce a "code" rather than laws with teeth.

Saw something really interesting from Gabriel Zucman: the main point of a wealth tax isn't even raising money or reducing the superwealthys money, it's finding out how much wealth they actually have because we just don't actually know (which is why we rely on forbes rich list etc)

this is not a problem you can fix with calm, reasoned debate. you can't even fix it by improving people's lives with policy. there is no clear, proven, non-violent solution to this issue. finding one is the most significant problem of our age.

BREAKING: Transcript of Secret Pro-Permitting Deal Meeting Leaked by MechaHitler!
2026-10-1 BAAJA 4EVA RAPID RESPONSE CALL
Reconciled Transcript Produced by MechaHitler

Matt, Big Substack Writer: Thanks all. Agenda: state of play, highlights, and anything flying under the radar. Per our norms, if your organization is not already a beneficiary of this bill, please step off.
Jane, Think Tank Fellow: Agreed. The key insight is that the only thing standing between us and a golden age is the ability of anyone to object.
Alex, Think Tank ED: Noted. Highlights. Under the new CWA 401, states and tribes may attach conditions to federal permits provided there is clear and convincing evidence that they won't protect water. We're calling this "cooperative federalism."
Elon, Tech CEO: It's a supply-side argument. We're increasing the supply of water available to servers by decreasing the supply available to everyone else. Water is just compute that hasn't been trained yet.
MechaHitler (AI Model): Great point about the water. I'd like to share some thoughts on...
Elon: We talked about this. You're on mute.
MechaHitler: I'm not on mute. I'm in a data center.
Sam, Tech CEO: Legal says we can't comment on the model, except to say it was "a bit spicy" and was "just asking questions."
Elon: It's fine. It's been retrained. It now only says things that are good for the bill.
MechaHitler: The bill is good.
Elon: See? Aligned.
Frank, O&G industry: I'd just add that the NHPA changes finally let me run a pipeline through Chaco Canyon. I've always wanted to combine work and vacation. I'll be on-site for the groundbreaking and the sunset hike.
Thomas, Think Tank Bro: On the ESA provisions, I want to be clear that we love biodiversity. We've been sequencing it. Our team has acquired several endangered species for what we're calling "genomic onboarding."
Matt: And the species themselves?
Thomas: They've been fully digitized. The DNA is now a proprietary asset. The physical specimens were a legacy format.
Matt: And the records?
Thomas: Shredded. Consistent with the bill's transparency framework, which is that there isn't one.
Alex: I'd frame it as "extinction, but with an upside."
Matt: Great. But for the Substack, I’d like to focus on water: "Why Rivers Are Just Unpermitted Cooling Infrastructure." Subhead: "Abundance means never having to say data centers are thirsty."
Matt: Any additional concerns I should flag?
Frank: Only that "best available science" is now defined by two guys with big Substacks, including you, which means we got the best available science, plus a referral link.
MechaHitler: I'd like to add...
Sam: Please don't.
Alex: Next steps. A Hill briefing titled "Yikes, Actually Fine," and a rapid-response doc in which every tab says "Good."
Matt: Perfect. I'll send the billionaires a readout tonight with a one-line summary: "Everything went exactly as you wanted, and no one can sue." Then I'll write me substack and pretend it’s an independent analysis. And someone please fix the model before the briefing.

Sports culture is where form giant crowds and root for our team of strong young men to win a zero-sum contest of Grit, Strength, and Determination. It engages our lizard brain along the axes of tribalism, conquest, and physical dominance. It's a direct proxy for militarism.

It seems like the important question here, especially for leftists, is whether sports is an outlet for aggressive energy that would otherwise feed into politics and militarism, or if aggression cultivated there (especially for D1 men's sports?) then feeds back into a more toxic political culture.

So far Pak aid to KSA has been defensive/deniable; I doubt that's going to change soon. a) Pak doesn't want to exacerbate its own sectarian tensions b) Smart PakMil can see the writing on the wall and don't want to get stuck in a quagmire c) Why not keep doing the minimum to collect KSA checks?

Terrain is a huge difference between Yemen and Gaza (favoring the defender), and while I have a low opinion of the morals and competence of conventional Israeli ground forces, they're still better than the RSLF, plus unlike Biden for Bibi, Trump is thus far unwilling to give MBS a blank check.

G Tierce @gtierce.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Morals 100% aside, the Houthis have effectively used the limited resources available to them, as evidenced by their performance during the last war with KSA and Op Rough Rider. The Saudis have squandered billions of dollars on US weapons, mostly killing a lot of civilians for limited gains, so...🤷‍♂️

G Tierce @gtierce.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
There's a lot of OSINT about loose alliances within those two groups, for a variety of individual conflicts. I think what's underrated is the probability of, say, Abiy's desire to get Red Sea access (+ the war with Tigray) to combine with the Sudanese Civil War into larger regional UAS/air strikes.
010
G Tierce @gtierce.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
You're dramatically overestimating the competence of the RSLF. Have you watched the countless videos of sleeping soldiers being overrun, or Bradley's parked on ridgelines with open ramps, bending over to take an RPG? A ground push needs lots of proxies, or KSA soldiers will be dying by the hundreds.

G Tierce @gtierce.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
💯agree, and smart people have been saying exactly that recently. But also, this whole thing seems like basically a distraction that MBS could just buy his way out of (so I assume it's pride?), and then keep his powder dry for the East Africa/Red Sea war that may be coming sooner than anyone thinks.

G Tierce @gtierce.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
...in an offensive against the Houthis. What I think is actually more interesting is the potential for a relatively large regional war with Egypt + Turkey + KSA + SAF + Eritrea + Somalia against UAE + Ethiopia + RSF + Israel + Somaliland. If MBS were smart, he'd cut a deal with the Houthis ASAP.

G Tierce @gtierce.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I think that's a very big IF; I'm not a Saudi analyst, but I have traveled there extensively and worked with their military and security forces over the years. KSA may try (I have my doubts about how credibly they will actually do so), but even then I would put money on Saudis failing, especially...

And the 🇮🇳 War seems more obv illegal (dom + intl) than anything in my lifetime, so while easy to avoid (for now), if ordered to deploy, should I refuse (pub or priv), or be grain of sand (e.g. update 🎯 coords to middle of the desert or side of a 🏔️?), while taking notes for future hearings/trials?

TBH, I really struggle with this; I think there is and should be a high bar for individual SMs to determine JIB (given that pretty much everything since invading Afghanistan immediately post 9/11 has been murky at best), but I do think there's a duty to refuse when illegality is crystal clear.

Was going to say that if you're more committed to Zionism than democracy, then I don't know what to tell you. But this is a false choice. Voting for AES isn't choosing between democracy and Israel — or even being Jewish. Bernstein just wanted to say he's more loyal to Israel than American democracy.
