It’s wild that no other media outlet besides the Mercury is covering the Dan Ryan text saga…like, these lobbyists were calling councilors of color racial epithets. They called me a burrito. Meanwhile there were ten million stories about daddy gate, but crickets on this? Disparity in standards

Well folks it happened: a U.S. district court has ruled that Americans no longer have to go through the ATF and register to acquire short-barreled rifles, shotguns or suppressors. This is a massive change to gun laws in this country and also...not likely to change much. I'll explain.
Although the district court’s injunction applies only to plaintiffs and certain other specified
persons, the Department has determined to exercise its enforcement discretion to create greater
uniformity, consistent with the Attorney General’s statement today. Consequently, effective
October 9, 2026, ATF will no longer require individuals to seek ATF approval under the NFA
before making or transferring short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, silencers, and “any
other weapon[s]” as defined in 26 U.S.C. § 5845(e). ATF will also no longer require such items
to be registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. These policies apply
uniformly to anyone otherwise subject to these requirements, not just to the plaintiffs in the
litigation

I don’t think that the people who protested Mamdani at the Israelis for Ceasefire vigil are broadly representative of the larger NYC pro-Palestine movement, but I do think they are a very vocal fringe contingent that many outsiders see as representative of the whole, which is… bad.

Watching atrocities causes second hand trauma, the people who do it for a living (shout out to Bellingcat) have a whole document on how to deal with the psychological toll that watching human suffering does and how to mitigate it. The folks we're talking about are essentially mainlining trauma.

Seeing Zohran next to his police commissioner he didn’t pick and couldn’t afford to fire, following his righteous outrage with bloodless cop speak, and followed by the state AG declining to comment at all, shows how precarious his position is.

Put another way: The best way to lose Zohran to the liberals, it seems to me, is to reject his sincere efforts to balance accountability to us and to the broader constituency we would like to see *join* us, and in so doing force him to look elsewhere for reliable support.

The worse things get for them, the more they'll lean into targeting Black people, immigrants, and trans people. These are the areas they've found the most success. But it has and will continue to expand. Back to Muslims & Palestinians is already happening. Or Jews, from the other wing of the movmt.

I have actually rather strong feelings about the right way to handle being called a slur for a thing you actually aren't, because it can accidentally be extreeeemely revealing a panicked "GROSS, NO I'M NOT!!" forever undercuts anything that sounds like allyship you might ever attempt to say again

this is so bleak, actually imagine being called a slur for a group you don't even belong to and instead of going "wow holy shit, no one should have to put up with that, we need to hold people to account," you go "no guys it's okay I hate them too!!!" and just hand the bully your lunch money

Two things are happening to make people more aware of the injustice in Palestine: 1. Israel's continued atrocities in Gaza 2. wealth inequality and political unrest not seen in a century or more, at which point Jews will get blamed and targeted first, and yes, Israel is a proxy for Jews

This isn’t good enough IMO and still tries to excuse away their tweets with “I’m constantly watching Palestinians get murdered.” Ok then you need to change your media diet. Unless you’re Palestinian/Israeli or involved in an NGO you shouldn’t have to consume that content. It’s radicalizing.

Until there is a stronger reaction to the authoritarian and toxic wings of the left, they will keep succeeding at eating their own. Keep succeeding at winning by losing. The way they disrupted the peace rally Mamdani attended yesterday says it all. They will burn it all down just to make a point.

the other thing is that this is a totally incoherent and arbitrary standard for deciding who has rights and who doesn't. you could say the same, for instance, of alito's vision of inviolate "religious liberty" or expansive gun rights.
