The bizarre culture that’s sprung up around Silicon Valley AI companies - which overlaps hugely with rationalist and effective altruist circles - appears to be seriously pressuring some women into attending sex parties for the sake of networking. This is, needless to say, horrifying.

The purpose of SlutCon is to help ease men who are scared of approaching women, and for women who simply enjoy flirting to be in an environment where that happens a lot, since there's generally a dearth of that
At the same time, many - probably most! - women do Not want to be flirted with or propositioned by men they don't know. When a small scene only has a handful of large, well-known events, each one has disproportionate impact on everybody's ideas of acceptable behavior among other members of their milieu.
Attending the same events = specific shared context. Means
you're somewhat on the same page.
I suspect that the men who publicly raised concerns about SlutCon's impact on the scene are being megaphones for private objections and distresses they've heard from women in the scene who would NOT be comfortable at an event like that, but who don't voice it publicly because they suspect they'd suffer socially for doing so. That going to SlutCon to be flirted with gives women social cachet, and squirming at the idea means you're [not cool, can't get with the program, are probably a wokescold or a prude etc etc other pejoratives] and therefore, that you'll be excluded or held at a distance
Now, if this scene were purely a social scene, that'd be perfectly fine. Don't go to parties that don't suit you!! The issue arises because it's NOT purely a social scene. This scene is inarguably tied up with Al safety, research, and the SF tech scene in general.
When consistently being invited to the right parties is professionally advantageous, and when SlutCon itself **is** going to be an excellent networking opportunity for people in those fields, it's not neutral that {sexual proclivities} are the filtering mechanism that determines who's in the room. It means that promiscuity & forwardness is explicitly professionally advantageous.
And, if the norms of SlutCon influence the norms of that milieu outside of the e…My suspicion is that men come out of the event more bold, more forward, and with the expectation that events attended by former flirt-girls are fair game for SlutCon-style forwardness. This creates a hostile environment for women who just want to socialize and work with these men, without being propositioned. And without pretending that they're cool with being sexualized for the sake of their inclusion in the scene.
I don't think we have solutions yet, but it's important that we can talk about it, at least.

the purpose of SlutCon is to help men who are scared of women to start liking women, by putting them in proximity to women who like men and aren't scared of men
I'm not attending or involved in any way, but this is very aligned to my own mission and I'm rooting for their success

That space was already occupied by a DoorDash driver who was berating the employees because the pizza he was supposed to pick up had to be redone because it didn't bake right.

I even asked the manager afterwards what I could have done. She didn't have any suggestions. It was such a frustrating experience. I was more mad at the futility I felt knowing that things had likely gone wrong, but needing to wait to confirm it than I was at the mixup in the first place.

I was right. They had to restart my order. I spent an hour in the shop. They were apologetic and gave me the food for free. I gave the staff a big tip because I saw the stress. Still, I was tired and hungry. I would have loved to avoid the mixup I could see coming but had no idea how to avoid.

The shop was super busy. There were irate customers. The staff was slammed and stressed. If I suddenly jumped up and said, "I think you're handing out my pizza," I would have been perceived as paranoid at best if not rude. And what if I was wrong? If I threw myself in front of the wrong pizzas?

Picked up food on Sat. They handed me the pizzas, but there was a salad backlog. They offered to put the pizzas on the oven to keep warm. I agreed. Later, I saw an employee give my pizzas to someone else. I was 85% certain, but wasn’t sure what to do. What’s the etiquette in that situation?

A couple of years ago, I upgraded to a 3.5HP treadmill (www.amazon.com/dp/B0CGLYKX93) and haven’t had any issues since. I hope you don't run into similar issues, but if you start noticing the treadmill overheating, slowing down, smelling, etc. during longer sessions, that could be the issue.

Jason Grigsby @gri.gs · 15/09/2026
When it reached the point where it was overheating (and smelling like an overheated motor) before I reached an hour, I did some research. Reddit threads suggested it was because the motor was underpowered which was a little surprising because I wasn't running on it or anything.

FWIW, I eventually had to replace my first under desk treadmill (different brand, but similar HP) with one that was rated for higher horsepower. What I found was that the treadmill would overheat when using it for a longer period of time and the time period decreased the longer I owned it.

We’re about halfway through the first run of Multipage #2: IMAGES, and I’m probably only doing the one re-issue of #1: HEADINGS — grab yourself a copy of each while you still can, and help out @translifeline.org at the same time! multipa.ge
Visible content:
WELCOME TO MULTIPAGE VERSION
A zine about HTML elements

FROM THE EDITOR

Alright. Here we go. The images issue.
Deep breaths.

WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM?
This is the images issue.
SO?
That's like my entire deal.
YOUR "DEAL" IS IMAGES?
I mean, yeah, kind of. Images are in the
top three things that are my deal, easy.
Images, Mega Man 2, and some third thing,
probably.
WHY?
Because images might be the only thing
we’ve managed to fuck up worse than
headings, and we don’t even have the
excuse of a eternally-broken standard.
Good ol' `img` fires off a request for an
image source and puts it on the screen
with staggering efficiency, and it makes a
text alternative available. Worked great
for decades. It still does!
The first half, well, it's fast, so
whatever; may as well cram a huge PNG-24
down the pipe because we vaguely remember
hearing that a PNG doesn't "have
compression," and "compression" probably
looks bad, we bet! Besides, what's four or
five megabytes between friends?
Meanwhile we fully biffed the second half
of what it does; just, couldn’t be
bothered to do it. Enjoy hearing those
filenames, users browsing via assistive
tech.
NO YEAH NOT GREAT
Ah, but unlike headings, image standards
evolved to meet the changing times! You
see, `img` wasn’t up to the task of
delivering sources optimized for a
responsive layout, so through the hard
work and selfless dedication of a whole
crew of brilliant designers and developers
and the strikingly handsome Chair of their
web standards group—
OKAY DIAL IT BACK
—we got all manner of amazing new
standards that allowed `img` to keep on
doing what it did best, but with
brilliantly optimized—
STILL PRETTY BRAGGY
Well, I didn't come up with it. A bunch of
people way smarter and more talented than
I am came up with it all. I just got them
together and, like, printed up stickers
and t-shirts and posted about it and
stuff.
AH SO THIS IS YOUR THIRD "DEAL"
"This?" "This" what?

It is effectively a license for Trump to cancel the election in whichever states and counties he wants — it only takes one ostensibly variant ballot to not transmit a vastly larger batch of fully compliant ballots, which is insane.

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.
Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
impracticable zero percent failure rate.
13 When ballots are submitted to USPS in large-volume
batches, if any one ballot in the batch cannot be verified against the Portal, all ballots in that
batch will be rejected. For example, if a state election official brings a batch of 10,000 ballots to
USPS and USPS is unable to match just one of those ballots against the Portal – because, for
example, someone has recently changed their name after marriage or they’ve moved – then
USPS would refuse to mail the remaining 9,999 ballots as well. As the whistleblower notes,
