Wild 24 hours. @wordfenceofficial.bsky.social is reporting a massive spike in attacks over the last 24 hours or so as shown by the attached network graph. Our site has seen over 11k attack attempts today alone. I’ve been looking for other reports on this. Anyone else seeing this?
The graph shows a steady number of total attacks blocked by the Wordfence Network from July 27 to August 22, followed by a sharp spike starting on August 24 reaching over 600 million attacks.

I’ve written another article about responsive images. Why can’t I let this topic go? You can look forward to that article next week. In the meantime, check out this amazing header image @tylersticka.com created for it. More soon!

Gemini’s input box load before the rest of the page does which I appreciate. Unfortunately, if you start typing in it too soon, it will cut off your typing in the middle and then trying to answer the few characters you managed to type. Wonder how much compute is wasted by this.
Screenshot of a Gemini interaction right after I open the page. My chat bubble says, "On," which was part of the first word I was writing. The full sentence was going to start with "One of the websites…"&10;&10;Gemini's response is, "It looks like your message got cut off again! Did you mean to ask a question starting with 'On…' or did you accidentally hit send too soon. I'm right here whenever you're ready to finish your thought!"&10;&10;From my perspective, I never hit enter. In fact, I continued typing my sentence while Gemini decided to try to figure out what I meant with the first two characters.

Wonderful. Our accountant has completely gone AWOL leaving me to try to figure out how to file an extension and guess how much to pay the IRS. That's assuming I can pay the IRS BECAUSE SOMEONE SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE FOR APRIL 15TH! WTF ARE THEY THINKING?

Two AI products above Friends in the Facebook navigation. Could there be any clearer statement about Meta’s priorities? Also, WTF is Manus AI and why is it different than Meta AI? Actually, don’t answer that. I’m never going to use either of them.
A Facebook navigation starts with search, then my profile, followed by two AI products (Meta AI and Manus AI) before getting to Friends.

Slack, what the fresh hell is this? Interrupting my day to try to upsell your AI crap and this is the best use case you can come up with? GTFO
Screenshot of Slackbot DM that says, "Hey, grigs! Time to wrap up your week :star emoji: You have 4 more AI search previews. Let's summarize what you accomplished this week." There are two buttons "What did I accomplish this week?" and "Don't Ask Again."

We’ve been let into the main room. I thought we would be safe here, but there is a skull on a box at the center of the room. I’ve been told his name was Yorick. May have been antifa or merely a jester who made fun of the Mad King. There’s no escaping “war-torn” Portland.

Oooh… @tylersticka@social.lol just created the coolest header image for my upcoming article. Any guesses what I’m writing about?

Follow up question about iOS App Clips. Do you have any installed on your phone right now? They are listed at the bottom of your App Library and have dotted lines around the icon. appletoolbox.com/how-to-fi…
Screenshot of my iOS App Library scrolled all the way to the bottom where the App Clips are stored. The App Clips start with a square icon with a dotted line around. The same icon is at the bottom of the right-side navigation used to jump to different letters in the alphabet.

Sorry to be a broken record, but I’m 40 minutes into the podcast and decided to try to find Oath to check it out. My initial search was useless so I looked for a link in the podcast description and there aren’t any (again).
DuckDuckGo search results for “Oath” have no hint at the organization described in the podcast

I don’t know for certain what he would have done, but I’m pretty sure it would better than Tim Cook. www.macstories.net/stories/are-... Like most people who capitulate to Trump, Tim Cook has failed the Lando test.
A scene from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes back. Lando Calrissian is about to open a door. Han Solo and Leia Organa follow him. He looks over his shoulder and says, “I've just made a deal that will keep the Empire out of here forever.”Darth Vader says, “I am altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it further.”Lando Calrissian walks into a room with Lobot and two stormtroopers. Lando says, “This deal is getting worse all the time.”Lando Calrissian speaks into an intercom to broadcast a message to everyone in Cloud City, “The Empire has taken control of the city. I advise everyone to leave before more Imperial troops arrive.”

I’ve never seen a channel like this before. It says it was automatically generated by YouTube. Links to: support.google.com/youtube/answ... I wonder how YouTube got the music. Anyways, I hope it’s welcome news that the music is online. If not, I bet you can you can ask for it to be removed.
Velvet Tongue YouTube Channel info page says “Auto-generated by YouTube” with a link to https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7636475?hl=en

I’m pretty sure we tested it at the time. I’ve been trying to find where I advocated for it to change to the current behavior, but I've been unable to find it. I did find a reference in our Slack to the old language on Chrome's FAQs from 2020.
Scratch the part about loading=lazy. I swear I saw something about them changing the behavior as described in [1] above, but I can’t find it now. Instead, I see in Chrome’s FAQs:

"How does the loading attribute work with images that are in the viewport but not immediately visible (for example: behind a carousel, or hidden by CSS for certain screen sizes)?

Only images that are below the device viewport by the calculated distance load lazily. All images above the viewport, regardless of whether they’re immediately visible, load normally"

With this additional information, I’d remove loading=lazy and move the lazy loading helper from a possible thing to do to a near certainty to do.[2]
[2] The picture hack would remove the need for the library, but it feels wrong to me.

OMG I love the typography on @mandymichael@front-end.social’s slides. And there are so many great font performance tips in her #perfnow talk.
Mandy Michael presents her performance.now() talk under a gorgeous slide about self-hosted font files. The slide is pink with percentages highlighted in red with a striking typeface with unique shapes for the Rs and 3s.

Kicking myself for forgetting to include this photo of Barry Pollard in my #perfnow slides. @tkadlec@mastodon.social got it in. There’s a custom emoji of this photo in the web perf Slack.

Today is Blue Beanie Day celebrating web standards. So proud of the small role that we at @cloudfour.com have had in helping push web standards forward! #bluebeanieday
It’s me! I’m wearing a blue Cloud Four beanie and a yellow hoodie. I’m trying to smile without looking too dorky. Not sure I succeeded.

In it, they describe the types of objects that are difficult to scan. I think the mug is challenging because it has a reflective surface. I'll trying something less shiny next.

My first attempt to use Shopify’s app on iOS 17 to create a 3D model didn’t exactly go as expected. 😀
A flat image from a 3D model of a coffee mug that features the cover of my book, Progressive Web Apps. The mug itself looks like it was made out of clay. My co-workers say it looks like it is from a Wallace and Gromit or claymation-style movie.
