Lean's dependency resolution is... apparently... interesting.
Screenshot of terminal: Some mismatched dependencies come transitively from other packages in your lakefile. Try putting `require mathlib` last in your lakefile so that Mathlib's versions take precedence, then run `lake update`.

We need more innovation on things like cheap effective sound barriers. Quality of life improvements from quiet cities (and cons...) without requiring everyone be quiet would be massive.

Some initial thoughts, and a complicated mix of feelings. Wow. I mean, Erdos problems are cool (I genuinely mean that), I didn't know about the Jacobian conjecture before it got disproved. But this newest batch from OpenAI hits home in a way the previous announcements did not.

A woodcarver named Becky W (vortenjou.bsky.social, rosehip.wordpress.com) made a sculpture of my nuthatch comic, showing a white-breasted nuthatch sitting on real nuts and hatching one of them. I'm so happy
A wooden carved and painted sculpture of a white-breasted nuthatch sitting on some nuts with a nutmeat with wings flying away into the sky.A four-panel comic. The first panel shows an arrow pointing down at a happy-looking nuthatch bird, and a caption: This is a nuthatch. The caption says "It's called a nuthatch because... wait no" and we see the nuthatch standing on a pile of nuts, tucking them under it. The caption says "That's not... wait" and the nuthatch is roosting comfortably on the pile of nuts. The caption says NO. And we see that one of the nuts has hatched and some walnut meat is flying happily into the air on little wings.

Great piece explaining why Canadian fires by and large are not the result of forest management issues & for the most part cannot be fought, only mitigated near infrastructure and inhabited areas. Non-Alaskan US views of fire management just do not apply. www.theclimatebrink.com/p/canadas-bo...

Canada's boreal wildfires aren't just bad forest management
Higher fire season temperatures are strongly correlated with increased area burned

I've had to update my computer 2 days in a row because of new linux vulnerabilities caused by C, found by LLMs. Is this the end of C as a viable programming language? Or the beginning of a sufficiently sophisticated "linter" to make C actually robust?

re rusty-bun: incredible how many people who think it's worse to have "a rust codebase with a lot of unsafe" than to have a codebase in a language where ALL the code is unsafe by definition.

Glancing at the bun LLM zig->rust rewrite, and I don't think their model quite understands the meaning of safe code
    /// This method does *not* `Drop` the removed items.
    pub fn shrink_and_free_shallow(&mut self, new_len: usize) {
        // SAFETY: caller asserts new_len <= len; leaked elements are intentionally not dropped.
        unsafe { self.unmanaged.set_len(new_len) };
        self.unmanaged.shrink_to_fit();

I have a lot of respect for people not giving their work away for free. I'm personally disappointed by this decision and likely biased. I don't know why anyone would listen to me. I'm writing my thoughts more for myself than anyone else. Caveats out of the way: I think this is a mistake.

Huh? The proposed rule changes nothing. There are no e-mopeds certified to "meets all applicable Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS)". Insurance won't exist as no legal e-mopeds exist. Enforcement won't happen just because illegal vehicles are now illegal in a slightly different way.
torontotoday.ca
Could there be fewer e-mopeds in Toronto bike lanes soon?
New rules could force riders of fast e-mopeds and e-scooters to get a restricted motorcycle licence and insurance

A lot of popular AI cyber security discourse fails to understand the asymmetry between offense and defense. Defense is avoiding, fixing, and mitigating vulnerabilities you don't know about with defensive code and practices. Red teaming harder than the attackers is neither necessary nor sufficient.

The really disappointing part of this project is that they're planning to power it with gas turbines (at least the first 1GW data-centre which I could find that information for). The least environmentally unfriendly, and likely cheapest, fastest, and most reliable way to build this would be solar.

People are talking about "context engineering" as if its going to stick around - I don't buy it. Yes, if you want to turn an LLM into a useful tool it's really important what goes into its context... but that doesn't mean you "engineer" it.

This is something I've especially been thinking about with AI-driven development. Claude writes way more tests than me. Too many. Unmaintainably many. But if I delete a test the second it no longer serves its purpose instead of thinking about how to fix it up to fit whatever changed, it's fine.
