Surely having a large population but its spread over a large area is still a problem of getting people into the city centres? Also what makes Greater Manchester different to say Newcastle where they seem to be using the Tyneside figures?

The Labour Party’s women’s conference on 26/9/26 was an embarrassing farce, with only 200 delegates of the 1,000 normal attendance (no major unions) in protest of the Labour Party’s shameful abandonment of trans people following the legally absurd ruling of the Supreme Court in FWS in April 2025.

If you look at Heaton you can see a small routing error which is quite interesting. Looks like they are trying to route it without the operator provided routes which are normally rubbish. But where bus stops aren't connected to the road properly its routed them through the wrong places.

Even just people constantly "advocating" for them puts people off cycling. I think it was something like only 2% of cyclists (or potentially journeys) needed to be disuaded for the effects of helmets to become negative. How many people are put off by the aparent risk or by not having a helmet?

My favourite is when you tell people that it's probably more dangerous for society by putting people off cycling and encouraging more people to drive you get so much hate for it. You can immidiately see who's just vitue signalling and who actually cares about safety.

Yes, all good points. Although good design can combat so much of that. I would much rather have a useful bit of infrastructure that feels more dangerous than a token bit of infrastructure that no one uses.

Compare this to the central motorway and the significant cost to keep that open and risk to workers to keep vehicles flowing. Similar to the central motorway pedestrian bridge which has been closed for weeks with inpropper signage and a long diversion. Anyone remember the hierarchy of road users?

The fun thing is they could have significantly reduced the pollution from cars by reducing their acceleration. However it would have made cars feel 'sluggish' so never got implemented. All so someone in a can get their tank sized car 0-60mph a couple of seconds faster.

I think it's the problem with people that are "experts in everything". He is definitely aggressively contrarian. My only issue with car park solar is that I would rather see parking removed especially in cities. Solar would be a long term investment in keeping it. Otherwise I only see benefits.

This is where the problem comes in. I'm sure there will now be anti rights vigilante groups as has already been seen around the UK. It's completely disconnected from reality and a disgraceful policy. I wonder if enough organisations start getting sued they might help push back against it.

From what they are putting put on socials they don't want people to police bathrooms. Unless someone feels uncomfortable or reports someone using the "inappropriate" bathroom. If they don't then enforce it it could be sex based discrimination against the person who complained.

So we're now doing it to increase traffic, not for the safety reasons previously used to justify it. At least that's finally been admitted. Now we can ask: Where is that traffic going? Is it going to cause congestion elsewhere? Is it going to decrease safety?

Then there's the barriers with no information about the works on them. The signs completely blocking the pavement and a cyclists dismount sign despite the cycle lane still having space to travel on where the works are. Why do we keep accepting such terrible traffic management?
Picture of a light grey paved footpath with a red "Footpath Closed" sign in the centre of it. To the left of that is a black asphalt cycle lane with a large yellow cyclists dismount sign blocking it. It is a residential area with car parking to the left of the cycle lane and a green hedge with a small wall to the right. There are two storey terraced style houses in the backrought and a blue cloudy sky.

The traffic lights were phased with only a 8 second pedestrian phase. Two seconds of that had cars going through it cause there wasn't a proper gap before. There is a 10 second pause where no lights were green. And they had lights partially out in multiple directions.

Remember Streeting's review into whether young people are being overdiagnosed with ADHD, autism, and mental health issues? Well, the interim report is out, and there's a reason the media are silent on it (spoiler: it proves what a lot of us have been saying all along)
In others, notably ADHD and autism, rising diagnoses and referrals appear to exceed changes in underlying epidemiological prevalence and are likely to reflect a combination of:

improved recognition
changing help-seeking behaviour
institutional incentives
pressures within existing service pathways
Across both ADHD and autism, best currently available population-based estimates remain relatively stable, while administrative diagnoses, self-identification and recorded service demand have increased substantially. In autism, the evidence also points to particularly rapid growth in identified need within educational systems, including increasing identification among girls and among young people without learning disability. These patterns suggest that rising demand is not simply the result of increasing prevalence, but of several processes operating simultaneously, including:

real increases in distress in some groups
improved recognition of previously unmet need
changing expectations about support
systems that frequently rely on formal diagnosis as the primary route to assistance
Across the system, support is too often accessed through pathways that are slow, fragmented and heavily dependent on diagnostic categorisation. While diagnosis remains essential for some forms of clinical decision-making, the evidence suggests that current arrangements do not always provide the most effective or efficient way of identifying and responding to need. In particular, where access to support depends heavily on formal diagnosis, demand for diagnostic assessment can increase more rapidly than systems are able to respond, generating long waiting times, duplication of assessment and pressure on specialist services.

The next phase of the review will therefore focus on clarifying the relationship between distress, diagnosis and need, and on examining how systems might respond more effectively to these patterns. A central objective will be to identify opportunities for developing more coherent, evidence-informed care pathways that enable support to be provided earlier and more proportionately, while ensuring that specialist services are available in a timely and appropriate manner for those whose needs are most complex.

Making the the East Coast Main Line have 4 tracks to Morpeth or even Alnwick would be a great option instead. It would allow more local stopping services, new stations and reduce the number of cars traveling up the A1 making it safer. The mayor should lobby for this over polluting road schemes.

Except they can't be rolled out at scale as they need to collect too much data and transmit or process it in vehicle. What will eventually happen is rolling back of these safety measures for efficiency. We can have vision zero streets with safe design of infrastructure. We don't need these.
