An enormous sendoff this morning for Simon Trewin. He was a giant of the publishing industry but the tributes were all about his empathy, curiosity and deep interest in other people, and the way he'd brought so many people in the (packed) church together. It's how anyone would want to be remembered.

Welsh poet RS Thomas died #OnThisDay in 2000. Here's a tribute by Rowan Williams (patron of the RS Thomas & ME Eldridge Society)…
Text of poem -

Deathship.
(In memory of R. S. Thomas)
The last years, words from a window smoothing the sea, the iron back and forth to probe the fugitive wrinkles carving a path down to the lost gate.
What hid in the pale clefts till now feels for the light, a soft uncertain lingering as if through stone, through furrows of flint.
The tides pressed neat as for an evening out: time to drag down a black boat from the shed, off through the gate, to balance on the slow sea at dark, ready to sail.
The smoke will rise, the cloudy pillar wavering across the sky's long page At dawn, somewhere westward, the boat flares in a blaze of crying birds.
- Rowan WilliamsA black-and-white close-up portrait of an elderly RS Thomas with tousled white hair and a deeply lined face, wearing a dark coat. He is looking slightly off-camera with a happy expression.

This still gets me every time. Albert Camus' letter to a teacher after he'd been awarded the Nobel Prize.
19 November 1957

Dear Monsieur Germain,

I let the commotion around me these days subside a bit before speaking to you from the bottom of my heart. I have just been given far too great an honor, one I neither sought nor solicited. But when I heard the news, my first thought, after my mother, was of you. Without you, without the affectionate hand you extended to the small poor child that I was, without your teaching and example, none of all this would have happened. I don’t make too much of this sort of honor. But at least it gives me the opportunity to tell you what you have been and still are for me, and to assure you that your efforts, your work, and the generous heart you put into it still live in one of your little schoolboys who, despite the years, has never stopped being your grateful pupil. I embrace you with all my heart.

Albert Camus

I think the sorry phenomenon of gig-filming is 90 percent about socials, rather than believing you'll ever watch it back. I feel like in the past decade or so we've been reprogrammed bit by bit to believe if we don't share what we're doing with everyone, it almost doesn't count as doing it at all.
