Not that that’s not an understandable thing to want, but rather than devoting millions of scientists to trying to reassemble ashes, you could probably do much more good telling people to use sunscreen and figuring out what else causes cancer and banning harmful chemicals and so on.

In the analogy, trying to get justice significantly after the fact when there aren’t any recordings or anything to clearly show what happened would be like trying to reassemble a dead person’s ashes back into a living person.

I’m reminded of when people say that the goal with cancer should not be a cure but prevention. I wonder if this is like that, where significantly more good could be done trying to change the conditions that lead to these things happening in the first place than trying to get justice after the fact.

Peanut butter tastes better than any meat ever will. Let's not slander it in favor of foods that require animal suffering and destroy the planet.

you could make a lot of this mania vanish by making college free. the worst parents think they're working a new market inefficiency by making their kid out-hustle the "lazy" kids. but even chill parents are holding a psychological lotto ticket that their kid puts up numbers that end in scholarships

I think it's a mix. Some are too cowardly to take stances they actually believe in, and some don't actually believe in things and use popularity and electability as excuses for not supporting them.

when Republicans are on the wrong side of a 60-40 issue they double down over and over and over, it becomes the center of political debate, and more often than not the numbers move. when Democrats are in that position they immediately give up

It’s very important to know you can just tell them their questions are dumb. It’s what Trump does! He’s been very successful at it! The media decided to stop asking actual important things to him because of it!

There’s such an easy answer to this “gotcha” question and it’s “Sports are inherently unsafe and unfair and it’s ridiculous to single out trans athletes when we allow 150 pound linebackers to go up against 260 pound linemen in freshman football on a daily basis. Let kids play with their friends.”

it remains extremely fucked up and under-commented-upon that laws targeting trans *children* specifically are further right and more extremist than ones where children are only collateral damage we should not agree that "we'll hurt the children more" is a moderate compromise

adults have great power over children, including power to speak for them and over them, and they use that power to silence children, pass policies that harm children, and then say they're working for children.

Voting rights need to be made universal so that kids have more power to fight back when their other rights are under attack.

Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
If we fight for better working conditions for ourselves, we should also fight for better working conditions for our children. Let's not, for example, call for a 4-day workweek for ourselves while saying nothing about the children in the school down the street working 5 days a week.

Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Children need political power to be able to fight for better working conditions just as adults do. Such as voting rights and the ability to unionize and negotiate their own working conditions.

Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
For example, many children do not truly have weekends off when they can be assigned homework over the weekend. They are not paid, have very little power to escape abusive workplaces, and often have restrictions that adults would find barbaric, like on being allowed to go to the bathroom.

It's important that we recognize the child labor that our children do as legitimate labor so that they can enjoy more of the benefits that adults enjoy that you listed above. Rather than pretending it's not even labor, which is an attitude that stifles improvements in their working conditions.

Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
To be clear, the educational labor that children perform is an unrecognized, underappreciated, uncompensated form of labor, just as there are many underappreciated forms of domestic labor.

I also think it should be illegal to prevent children from getting vaccinated, but I don't really view it as an either-or. You should both try to make it more legally difficult for parents to prevent their kids from getting vaccinated and try to persuade them to be less crazy in the meantime.

It doesn't sound to me like she's caving to MAHA, it sounds like she's trying to understand them and reach out to them to try to convince them to redirect their frustration with health care in a more sane direction like supporting Medicare for All. Seems worth a try to me!

School meals should be free for everybody. Charging children to eat somewhere they are legally required to be for the entire day is crazy.

Religious freedom shouldn't extend to a right to kill others. Children should not be considered property but full human beings with their own right to get medical treatment.

The issue is that people find it normal for college students to be broke and desperate, and take that as a fun, quirky rule of nature rather than something to fix. We need basic income and free college. College students should have lives just as cozy and comfortable as those decades older than them!

And to be clear, Piker was just explaining the concept of blowback, that when you attack a place, sometimes some of the people there get mad at you and seek revenge. He never meant to say that it was good that people died. It was an argument against willy-nilly military intervention.

This shields children from going hungry due to the financial issues of their parents. It also makes childcare more affordable for the poor, since the parental tax is a percentage of income instead of a relatively fixed amount per child, and all children receive the same basic income.
010
Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
The state then uses these funds to pay childcare directly to children as a basic income (which is likely then in large part transparently funneled back to parents for living expenses).

Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
As for compensation, it would basically eliminate child poverty if we instated a system of socialized child care. Under such a system, parents pay an additional tax rate for each child they parent.

If you or I find ourselves in an abusive workplace, we can quit and find a different job, but children cannot easily leave an abusive classroom for a different classroom.

Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
You can poo-poo the lack of freedom all you want, but not having an internal locus of control is heavily associated with mental health issues, and makes it more difficult to escape abusive situations.

Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
Basically, my point is that we shouldn't defend the current system too hard because in many ways it sucks. It would be better to spend time imagining a better system.
100
Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
A lot of the rights that a lot of adults take for granted like having weekends off are not a guarantee for many children in the current system, as many are forced to work weekends or long hours after school doing homework.
121
Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
While a step up in many ways from previous child labor, the current system of educational labor is not a perfect be-all-end-all either. Neither system allows kids to have much freedom over their own lives or fairly compensates them for their labor.

They know that the anti-genocide left is going to rise and they're going to go down in history as the group who lead to Trump's re-election out of an inability to stop supporting atrocities. It's really not going to look good in the history books, so the lashing out is sort of understandable.

Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Which explains a lot of the saltiness and the posting of this sort of meme in the first place. They see the writing on the wall.
110
Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
But if now the lie about electability is falling apart, which is the only thing centrists ever really had, I think centrists are going to struggle quite a bit in the future. If supporting genocide fails in generals consistently, why would you ever go for the pro-genocide candidate in a primary?
110
Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Ultimately, my takeaway is that centrists just are not nearly as electable as they so often claimed to be. And really, that's the only thing they supposedly had going for them, because their whole pitch was "We need to accept the slaughter of a few thousand innocent people to defeat Republicans."
110
Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
And very few on the left in swing states didn't vote for her anyway, so it's like you're not even arguing against the left, you're arguing against such a small group of people that they probably aren't seeing your post and probably would be too small to have changed the outcome anyway.

Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Like, the meme just isn't as effective and hard-hitting as you seem to think it is. Why defend the driver so hard? Kamala could have simply hit the brakes and run over nobody whatsoever. That seems like the best possible outcome, no?
120
Green Eraser @greeneraser.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
I've made this response to this meme before, but the meme seems to imply that the trolley driver doesn't have perfectly functioning breaks. The trolley driver could simply hit the breaks and nobody would die. Why not yell at the driver to hit the brakes rather than those yelling at the driver?

It is absolutely essential that people under 18 have the right to get health care as recommended by real experts when this conflicts with the wishes of their parents. And the first essential step we need to take in this direction is voting rights for all, as recommended in the DSA platform.

It's especially important to highlight that a lot of these people who trust RFK Jr are not just in charge of their own health, they are also in charge of the health of dependent children and can legally force or deny health care to these children based on RFK's recommendations.

I don't see any reason to gender the issue. Slotkin, Clinton, Kamala, Stevens, plenty of women refuse to admit they've been wrong to support a genocide. And the person you're praising right here is a man. It's not woman vs man, it's left vs right, people-powered vs corrupt.
