I can recall once in 1972 driving through a dusty San Remo with my parents, coming across the frontier from the French Riviera. Imagine my teen-age culture shock at seeing red hammer-and-sickle flags festooning all the lampposts. An honest-to-god communist town and proud of it. Sounds better now.

Even though the movie is about Texas turning blue in the presidential election, I can't help but to think that the sequel for Red, White, and Royal Blue coming out soon is making this happen. Like Heated Rivalry trashing the Sabres (and Buffalo) and then they finally made the playoffs.

We're repeatedly told that the killer app for pervert glasses - Meta's AI-enabled camera glasses and their imitators - is that they will remind you of someone's name and spare you the social awkwardness of not recognizing them.

In a hilariously twisted way this itself is a form of classism, as the idea that the Simple Country Working Man is intelligent or capable enough to recognize these standards and lie about their politics is just written off by the urban elites insecure about their own authenticity as human beings

one of the reasons i appreciated this essay from valentin tappia was its illustration of how even authoritarian regimes are trapped by their own narratives of legitimacy. even as murderous a man as pinochet was eventually undone by his own promise to be a "transitional" government

another lesson from these histories is that *margins matter*. it is easier to rig a 51-49 election; it is much harder to rig one that is 55-45, let alone 60-30. voting, in other words, will matter rather enormously in the next two years.

But grappling with Trump’s stuttering assault on the elections is also reminder that the gap between MAGA’s authoritarian aspirations and the reality of the political system remains vast. Trump’s autocratic desires are limitless, but his ability to impose them on the country is not.

brings me no joy to say that Fukuyama nailed it
But supposing that the world has become "filled up," so to speak, with liberal democracies, such that there exist no tyranny and oppression worthy of the name against which to struggle?
Experience suggests that if men cannot struggle on behalf of a just cause because that just cause was victorious in an earlier gen-eration, then they will struggle against the just cause. They will struggle for the sake of struggle. They will struggle, in other words, out of a certain boredom: for they cannot imagine living in a world without struggle. And if the greater part of the world in which they live is characterized by peaceful and prosperous liberal democracy, then they will struggle against that peace and pros-perity, and against democracy.

This is *the* main continuity between neo-fascism and the 20th Century variety. Erich Fromm argued exactly this in "Escape From Freedom," saying that modernity left many alienated and socially dislocated--and fascist strongmen promised to restore meaning and purpose to their lives.

people who are kind/thoughtful in their private lives can easily be transformed into braying maniacs by the power of mass affect. trump doesn't have hitler's sturm-und-drang, but the basic mechanism is the same - it's about creating a space for people to indulge their basest impulses
