It feels perfectly fair to state the fact that there was Russian interference. Burnham hasn’t suggested that it changed the outcome of the vote.

I wonder if it’s the opposite. Finance full of people who hate their jobs and just want to get to “the number” as quickly as possible. And they do all sorts of stupid and ineffective /counterproductive things to try and make that happen faster.

Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Abandoned, dismissed and gaslighted: there is no excuse for the way ME sufferers have been betrayed | George Monbiot
Changes in guidance and science seem to have little impact on millions of devastated lives. It’s a social crisis playing out behind closed doors, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

So much of the right these days have a massive patriotism problem. This guy: - is a tax exile (left long before this govt) - hates his own country while complaining he doesn’t get big enough subsidies from it - laments the manufacturing hit from a Brexit he supported www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

And those reporting their comments should at least make an attempt to pick them up on the hypocrisy of asking politicians to act in the national interest while they’ve flounced off to Monaco to protect their self interest

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

I guess having the same amount of money in the system going to a smaller number of institutions could help those institutions. The anticipated wave of mergers in the sector would go some way to facilitating that. But it wouldn’t be a “subsidy” for TEF silver/gold courses. Just more bums on seats
010
Grant Lewis @grantlewis.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
But if you have the same number of students, just distributed differently, that does nothing for the government finances as the student loan amount won’t change
200
Grant Lewis @grantlewis.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
That would only work if the government was willing to have fewer people having the opportunity of getting a degree. Better to encourage higher standards across the entire sector rather than lower access?
100
Grant Lewis @grantlewis.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Understood. But I don’t see how the exit of bad actors would, by itself, solve the underlying problems of the HE sector. Fewer institutions are just going to lead to even more over subscription at the remaining institutions. Or fewer people getting a degree.
130
Grant Lewis @grantlewis.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
But individual institutions are reacting to the incentive structures in place. There’s nothing “the sector” can do about “rogue institutions” as it has no power to force any institution to act in particular ways. That would require government action.
