The man's skeletal injuries looked like a train hit him, but he died in 1304 CE. At #ppa26Berlin last week, @uniofbradford.bsky.social scientist Jo Buckberry concluded he was likely whacked by a flying boulder, making him the first confirmed trebuchet death in the archaeological record. @science.org

There's just something so deeply satisfying about creating physical artifacts like this. Like, I think a big part of the value of (handwritten) morning pages for writers is racking up filled notebooks of wow, I thought, and I wrote. (In this case of course it's wow, I looked, and BIRDS!)

unexpected link for Six Degrees of Author Beef: Bryson v Thoreau
Book page saying "The American woods have been unnerving people for 300 years. The inestimably priggish and tiresome Henry David Thoreau thought nature was splendid, splendid indeed, so long as he could stroll to town for cakes and barley wine, but when he experienced real wilderness, on a visit to Katahdin in 1846, he was unnerved to the core. This wasn't the tame world of overgrown orchards and sun-dappled paths that passed for wilderness in suburban Concord, Massachusetts, but a forbidding, oppressive, primeval country that was 'grim and wild ... savage and dreary,' fit only for 'men nearer of kin to the rocks and wild animals than we.' The experience left him, in the words of one biographer, 'near hysterical.' But even men far tougher and more attuned to the wilderness than Thoreau were sobered by its strange and palpable menace."

Netflix’s Floor Is Lava is the worst-best show on TV
It’s essentially a live-action version of Zelda. Or Gladiators with less bounce. It’s utterly ridiculous. So why can’t I stop watching?

something to hang on my fridge: ns got a little shout out in the june issue of @locusmag.bsky.social from @mariahaskins.com :)
Another one of my favorite publications for flash fiction is Night Shades, which published 500-word, speculative flash fiction that often straddles the line between prose and poetry in deeply satisfying ways. Recent example of stories I’ve enjoyed in this magazine include the haunting “Everything Must Go” by Mercer Eddy about what happens in the aftermath of a(literal) yard sale, “In My World” by Justin Ocelot, a conflicted love story steeped in both regret and longing; and the quietly devastating “Watching As It Circles” by Chase Anderson.
