For the past 200 days, Georgians have been protesting every day in 8+ cities, blocking the main avenue in the capital. All this despite brutal crackdowns (hundreds tortured and hospitalized during protests), unlawful arrests, and draconian fines. The regime has to collapse.

As Trump deploys the National Guard against his own citizens, the importance of protecting our own human rights from abuse at the hands of govt has never been clearer. But *still* the Tories push to strip us of our protections, in a desperate bid for power for themselves. Important letter (Times)
Human rights
Sir, The Conservative proposal to repudiate the European Convention on Human Rights is not a technical reform (letters, Jun 7; news & leading article, Jun 6). It is a profound rupture in the postwar order that Britain, using its soft power, helped to build. As a founding signatory of the 1949 Treaty of London, the UK undertook to "accept the principles of the rule of law and of the enjoyment by all persons within its jurisdiction of human rights and fundamental freedoms" (Article 3). These are not optional. To repudiate the ECHR would lead only in one direction: withdrawal, or even expulsion, from the Council of Europe.Who benefits? Certainly not the British people, whose rights and freedoms the ECHR has long protected. But autocrats such as Presidents Putin and Xi would benefit, as well as others who seek to dismantle the international legal order that Britain helped to shape.
Winston Churchill knew better. But his successors in today's Conservative Party are not his heirs. He urged us to rise to the level of events. Yet we see the same pattern as we saw with Brexit: strategy subordinated to spectacle, judgment to gesture. This is the mark of a politics content with triumphs in the moment, bought at the expense of both our past and our future.

The LA protests will trigger a drumbeat of "law and order" messaging from the White House and their media allies as a prelude to invoking the Insurrection Act. This is entirely predictable, and any Dem or media outlet that facilitates this narrative will be aiding Trump's authoritarian project.

Letter in Times today
Text:

International law
Sir, Lord Hermer’s warning is not an insult but a timely reminder from legal history (news, May 30). His reference to Carl Schmitt was not a personal comparison, but a caution against a dangerous and corrosive doctrine: that state power may override law when convenient. That principle helped dismantle constitutional safeguards in interwar Germany and must be scrutinised wherever it resurfaces. The European Convention on Human Rights was an integral part of Churchill’s postwar vision. To treat it now as a mere obstacle to immigration policy is to forget why it was created: to ensure that governments, including our own, remain ultimately subject to a substantive vision of the law. The real divide is not between Remainers and Leavers, or Strasbourg and Westminster, but between those who believe in government under law and those who do not.
