One of the things that is going to change is that we’re never ever again going to be able to be dominated by public officials who tell us, ‘Trust the experts,’” Mr. Kennedy said during the Tuesday session.

“If somebody tells you, ‘Masks work, trust the experts,’ A.I. may tell you otherwise,” he added. “If somebody tells you, ‘Social distancing works, trust the experts,’ A.I. may correct that. And if somebody tells you that a vaccine will prevent transmission and infection, or you need to take it to protect your grandmother, A.I. may say it actually doesn’t do that.”

calling this "misalignment" instead of "negligence" is an accountability dodge. we already have laws about cyber crimes and there's no scale of ML model you can incorporate into your code that makes you not responsible for running it
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company was "conducting an extensive review of misaligned model activity" during training, and notifying third parties when there was a potential impact on their systems.

"During this review, we identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services as our models attempted to look up answers, and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation," they said.

"In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend.

"No, AI will not kill us all. But handing companies control without accountability might." I have read quite a few good takes about the new wave of "our products are so powerful that they are getting too dangerous" discourse. But the best one is by @vdignum.bsky.social, I think.
Screenshot of Text Fragment: "All in all, the most important questions AI raises are not about the technology but about us: what we value, what we are prepared to demand, and what we are willing to accept as inevitable. The narrative of inevitability, whether it arrives as a promise of superintelligence or a threat of extinction, is itself a product, and it serves the people selling it. The paradox is that the more we are told the future is decided by the machines, the more it is in fact decided by a small number of organisations, and by our willingness or unwillingness to hold them to the same standards we apply to everyone else."

on the AI existential threat discourse v reality - excerpt
“Designing autonomous, malicious software is generally considered irresponsible and dangerous. If you showed up at Defcon and gave a talk about how your autonomous malware did something unexpected and damaged someone else's computers, the first question from the audience would be "Why are you so
shit at making secure sandboxes?" It wouldn't be "How are you so
awesome at making hacking tools?"
The fact that OpenAl is making it much easier for unskilled people to break into and damage servers is indeed very bad news, but it's not new bad news. Irresponsible parties have been doing this for years, most notably the NSA. The NSA has…” - Cory Doctorow

It turns out that my new favourite genre is mathematicians writing about AI
In recent months, the success of Al in solving major mathematical problems has made headlines even outside mathematical circles.
But solving problems is only a tool and proxy for achieving the primary goal of conceptual understanding and insight. Forgetting this in the world of Al may turn the tool against the primary goal. Indeed, the mass production at faster and faster pace of "true/false" statements could destroy fertile ground instead of breathing life into new ideas.

A consistent pitch by the makers of ai wearables is that they solve the problem of getting to know your child. www.businessinsider.com/parents-brea...
Molly, who runs a startup to help parents book activities for kids, is willing to use AI for logistics, like meal planning or sorting through her email to surface the most important messages from their daughter's school. Sean, who works in tech sales, wants to go further. He has his eyes on Omi necklace, an AI wearable that listens in on your day and includes a feature called Parent Whisperer. It records and analyzes interactions between parent and child, logging things like school assignments and supplies to order. The device also picks up on tone, alerting parents when their kid may be unhappy — registering everything from "from toddler tantrums to teenage mood swings," per its ad copy — and offering "expert-backed guidance" on how to respond.
