Dead writers, France, Europe, cities, language, book history, the rise of the populist right. I hop about. Sometimes I wag my tail.

Access to culture is a right, not a privilege. Keeping museums free means millions can continue to explore, learn and be inspired, regardless of their background or income. That's good for London, and good for ensuring cost is never a barrier to discovery.

🚨 Meta blocked President Lula’s Facebook page and campaign ads two weeks before the election While also failing to block 87% of disinformation ads targeted against him. A handful of companies shouldn't have this much power over a country's democracy.

Meta Blocks President Lula’s Facebook Page and Campaign Ads
The page is now back online, but Lula's electoral coalition says Meta's actions harmed the president’s campaign.

reading london falling at the moment and it resurfaces one of the all timer quotes about the police from former Met Police Commissioner Robert Mark: "The basic test of a decent police force is that it catches more criminals than it employs, and the Met is failing that test."

Sacha Zala, historien : « La neutralité suisse est devenue une construction identitaire, presque religieuse ». Le Monde analysis of today's Swiss referendum, sponsored by the far right. Curious that in Ireland the equally quasi-religious fervour over 'defending neutrality' comes from the left.

This is quite unfair, because people of Irish heritage have made a quite significant contribution (see 'Pink Ladies') to far-right racist movements in Britain ... and this is the thanks we get! Saxon bastards.

This gets us back to Hillary Clinton's much reviled (and misquoted) remark about 'deplorables'. Did she have a point? Does it make sense to concentrate all one's fire on far-right populist leaders and ignore far-right populist followers? Have they no responsibility for their resentment and hatred?

The losing strategies against the far right pursued by Merz in Germany and Macron in France. Fourteen paragraphs. Twelve on what is being done wrong, two on what *might* be done instead, not untypical for articles from the 'intellectual left'. Maybe they should try inverting those proportions.

The worst part came before that when he described Ed Miliband as "of Jewish heritage". The word he was looking for is: Jewish. Disgusting. Many (most) journalists would be sacked for this and rightly so. I hope Miliband makes a formal complaint.

Quite similar in France, where there is little support for RN in cities. Possibly because white people there have long been living and working with dark-skinned people and don't find anything wrong with them. But if you live in a small village and get your 'news' from talk TV (mostly on crime) ...

Founded by Sylvia Beach, and situated from 1921 at rue de l'Odéon, the bookshop Shakespeare and Company was a favourite haunt of many famous authors, including James Joyce, whose 'Ulysses' Beach published in 1922. In 1951, a shop of the same name was opened on rue de la Bûcherie and still operates.

The alternative to expressing hostility and populist manipulation of 'fears' about immigration is not, as some of the sneaking regarders who speak of 'legitimate concerns' suggest, 'doing nothing' or 'ignoring the elephant in the room'. It is introducing sensible policies to facilitate integration.

Perceived by whom, and perceived by what analysis? In the UK, the hardline home secretary seems to base her policies on the notion that if the government appears tough people will not be tempted by the far right. This hasn't worked, either there or elsewhere. Many people prefer prejudice to fact.

I suppose many people's 'proposal' was no better than 'Why don't we get married then?' A friend of mine had a wonderful plan, carried through to perfection. But that's another story. Robert Mitchum said to his long-time girlfriend: 'Stick with me babe and you'll be farting through silk.' Beat that.

Appeasing the far right doesn't "take the issue off the table," or win over bigoted voters by showing you "understand their legitimate concerns." It encourages the far right, shifts the baseline in their favor, and makes the appeaser look weak. Nobody wants Diet Hate. Yet this keeps happening.
