Dead writers, France, Europe, cities, language, book history, the rise of the populist right. I hop about. Sometimes I wag my tail.

Among the 'undesirables' sent to their death in August 1942 were neighbours Camille Jourist (7), Simon Felner (8), Abraham & Regine Hirsz (15 & 8), Maurice Gutfrajnd (9), Paulette & Esther Kosiorowski (6 & 12) & the three Cybula children (10 to 14). 2/2 endaliamodoherty.substack.com/p/doing-the-...

Foreign workers were welcome in France after the manpower losses of WWI. But after the 1929 crash they faced hostility as 'undesirable aliens'. In 1942 radical measures were taken and many 'undesirables' deported to Auschwitz. endaliamodoherty.substack.com/p/doing-the-... 1/2

But if the EU gets less money surely it'll be harder for FN/RN to embezzle it from the European Parliament to funnel into their party funds? What's the French for cutting off your nose to spite your face?

Anyone remember Kenny Everett's 'lousy links'? Dr Finlay's Casebook takeoff: Janet: Did you hear? Charlie McDonald's been taken tae hospital in Edinburgh. They don't know what ails him, but when they opened him up they found he had four kidneys. Dr Cameron: Don't be silly woman, Charles hasnae four!

Access to culture is a right, not a privilege. Keeping museums free means millions can continue to explore, learn and be inspired, regardless of their background or income. That's good for London, and good for ensuring cost is never a barrier to discovery.

🚨 Meta blocked President Lula’s Facebook page and campaign ads two weeks before the election While also failing to block 87% of disinformation ads targeted against him. A handful of companies shouldn't have this much power over a country's democracy.

reading london falling at the moment and it resurfaces one of the all timer quotes about the police from former Met Police Commissioner Robert Mark: "The basic test of a decent police force is that it catches more criminals than it employs, and the Met is failing that test."

Sacha Zala, historien : « La neutralité suisse est devenue une construction identitaire, presque religieuse ». Le Monde analysis of today's Swiss referendum, sponsored by the far right. Curious that in Ireland the equally quasi-religious fervour over 'defending neutrality' comes from the left.

This is quite unfair, because people of Irish heritage have made a quite significant contribution (see 'Pink Ladies') to far-right racist movements in Britain ... and this is the thanks we get! Saxon bastards.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau - I may be oversimplifying him - thought that 'Man' was essentially good, but was corrupted by society. (He hadn't read 'Lord of the Flies'.) I might have thought something similar when I was seventeen but I've since found that people, on both the right and left, like to snarl.

This gets us back to Hillary Clinton's much reviled (and misquoted) remark about 'deplorables'. Did she have a point? Does it make sense to concentrate all one's fire on far-right populist leaders and ignore far-right populist followers? Have they no responsibility for their resentment and hatred?

Yes, I think you're right: thinking required. A recent article in Le Monde suggested (very briefly, too briefly) a bit of plain talking about the ways in which society is changing and what will have to be done if we are not to be steamrollered by the tech bros who tell us this or that is inevitable.

The losing strategies against the far right pursued by Merz in Germany and Macron in France. Fourteen paragraphs. Twelve on what is being done wrong, two on what *might* be done instead, not untypical for articles from the 'intellectual left'. Maybe they should try inverting those proportions.

The worst part came before that when he described Ed Miliband as "of Jewish heritage". The word he was looking for is: Jewish. Disgusting. Many (most) journalists would be sacked for this and rightly so. I hope Miliband makes a formal complaint.

Quite similar in France, where there is little support for RN in cities. Possibly because white people there have long been living and working with dark-skinned people and don't find anything wrong with them. But if you live in a small village and get your 'news' from talk TV (mostly on crime) ...

Founded by Sylvia Beach, and situated from 1921 at rue de l'Odéon, the bookshop Shakespeare and Company was a favourite haunt of many famous authors, including James Joyce, whose 'Ulysses' Beach published in 1922. In 1951, a shop of the same name was opened on rue de la Bûcherie and still operates.

That doesn't, for me, mean ignoring the phenomenon (not 'problem') but rather pointing out that immigration is necessary and potentially enriching and suggesting ways in which recently arrived people can be helped to acclimatise to a different culture and their children enabled to prosper.

Is one talking of the tribalists who put up flags to mark territory or of a wider group who may vaguely think 'Yeah, fine, but maybe we've gone a bit too far'? Let politicians of the right do what they want (it won't work for them), those on the centre left and left should refuse xenophobia. 1/2

The alternative to expressing hostility and populist manipulation of 'fears' about immigration is not, as some of the sneaking regarders who speak of 'legitimate concerns' suggest, 'doing nothing' or 'ignoring the elephant in the room'. It is introducing sensible policies to facilitate integration.

Perceived by whom, and perceived by what analysis? In the UK, the hardline home secretary seems to base her policies on the notion that if the government appears tough people will not be tempted by the far right. This hasn't worked, either there or elsewhere. Many people prefer prejudice to fact.

You may be as tired as I am of 'Fair enough, but Aer Lingus used to charge £300 to fly to London.' O'Leary, for some years, has been charging what he likes, or what the algorithm likes. Try being Polish in Ireland and going home in Christmas week. GOUGER.
