interested in questions of tech, labor, and worker futures? on April 10 in Princeton i'm hosting an outstanding lineup of panelists at "the future of (data) work," where speakers will discuss the ethnographic, archival, and participatory action research they've conducted with data + tech workers
poster for "the future of (data) work." top right corner contains event info: April 10, 9:30-4:30pm, Aaron Burr Hall 219." Under the title is the conference description: "The rapid expansion and commercialization of artificial intelligence systems has been enabled by the upscaling of data work, defined by Miceli and Posada as 'the labor involved in the collection, curation, classification, labeling, and verification of data.' Amidst debates about how 'intelligence machines' will impact the global workforce, this conference brings together a multidisciplinary group of scholars and organizers to examine the histories, topographies, and lived realities of data work around the world, centering the people behind the platforms that dominate our present to imagine alternative futures." Underneath this text is the list of panelists and their affiliations: Beth Semel, Organizer, (Assistant Professor, Dept of Anthro, Richard Stockton Picentennial Preceptor) Hunter Akridge Research Assistant (Grad Student, Dept of Anthro), Alex Hanna (DAIR), Seyi Olojo (UC Berkeley), Cindy Kaiying Lin (Georgia Institute of Tech), Julian Posada (Yale), Shivani Kapania (CMU), Samantha Dalal (Princeton CITP) Lilly Irani (UCSD), Sarah Fox (CMU). The background image, from Hanna Barakat/Archival Images of AI/AIxDesign, is a picture of hands yanking invisible strings through a rare earth mineral with a microchip superimposed over it set against. On the bottom of the poster are the sponsors (Princeton AI Lab, Princeton Dept of Anthro), and a QR code for the program).

The scientists leading the ABCD Study decided not to tell participants that their data had been misused for race research.

Parents and their children — who are now adults nearing the end of the decade-long study — reacted with surprise and dismay when The Times told them what had happened. They said they deserved to learn about it from the study’s organizers.

Scientists said they chose not to inform the families because they believed doing so could cause more harm than good.

Statement from Rep. Zoe Lofgren (Ranking Member on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee):
“The Trump administration’s egregious, corrupt, and disgraceful abuse of power continues, this time by kicking dedicated scientists out of their building so HUD Secretary Turner can have a penthouse dining suite. For an administration so obsessed with claiming that it's cutting spending, how can Trump justify the tax-payer dollars it will take to meet Turner’s ridiculous demands, like a gym for his exclusive use or parking spaces for his five cars? Instead of investing in our future, the Trump Administration is investing in private perks for Secretary Turner. Where will NSF staff go? What is the Trump administration’s plan? Once again, science loses, the American taxpayer loses, and our competitors, like China, win.”

A chart showing violent victimizations by race with Native Americans being the highest.

It reads "American Indians experienced a per capita rate of violence twice that of the U.S. resident population. On average, American Indians experienced an estimated 1 violent crime for every 10 residents age 12 or older."A chart of victims of violence by gender comparing Natives to non-Natives. American Indian females were less likely to be victims compared to American Indian males. The rate of violent victimization among American Indian women was more than double that among
