I was inducted and installed last night as the Rector for St Mary the Virgin Weston Turville in the Oxford Diocese (Church of England). The role sits alongside my academic commitments. Very grateful for the support of old friends and the warm welcome from new ones 🙏🏽❤️
Welcome to St Mary's, a friendly, all age and inclusive community where all are invited to encounter the love of God. Whether you are seeking spiritual growth, a place to worship, or simply curious about faith, you will find a warm welcome here. We celebrate diversity, embrace questions, and journey together in faith, love, and service. No matter your background, identity, or beliefs, you are valued, and we look forward to sharing this journey with you.St Mary's, a 12/13th century church, at night illuminated via uplight.Bishop Dave and me

Fascinated by how nineteenth century women sculptors used art to subvert contemporaneous misogyny. 2 neoclassical examples: Harriet Hosmer's 'Zenobia in Chains', 1859 & Edmonia Lewis's 'Death of Cleopatra', 1876
A woman and the intricate details of her attire are sculpted in marble. Zenobia ruled Palmyra (in present-day Syria) for six years after her husband’s death in 267 CE. She conquered Egypt and reigned until defeated by Roman emperor Aurelian who triumphantly marched her in chains in a procession through Rome.
In Hosmer's depiction, Zenobia is regal even in chains.Marble sculpture of Cleopatra in the moments after her death in her royal attire, in majestic repose on a throne. The identical sphinx heads flanking the throne represent the twins she bore with Roman general Marc

Happy birthday to Euphemia Lofton Haynes; first African American woman to earn a PhD in mathematics (1943); and a reformer of the segregated D.C. public school system. Her thesis was on symmetric correspondences. So, I think she would have enjoyed the one in her b.-d. years (1890-1980).

Watching so many people in the last 48 hours across the ideological spectrum insist that gutter racism is an intellectual position open to debate rather than a toxic belief has certainly been clarifying. People lose their lives & you continue to treat this as an intellectual exercise.

'The Eclipse' 1970, Alma Thomas
"The Eclipse was the last work Thomas created as part of her “Space” series. It was inspired by the total solar eclipse that occurred on March 7, 1970, and was visible from across the Eastern United States, including Washington, DC.
In a total eclipse, the moon blocks the view of the sun from Earth, appearing like a hole in the sky and allowing the sun’s corona, usually masked by bright light, to become visible. With its dark blue core and radiating rings of color, Thomas’s painting captures this rare moment of celestial alignment, its off-center composition suggesting the progressive movement of the moon across the sky."
