Private Eye:
London Fascist
Week begins
YES, it's that time again when the Fascism scene returns to London and this year black is very much in vogue.
Our models are sporting trademark black shirts twinned with black shorts and the very latest in balaclava chic.
The models sashayed through
London to the Daily Mail offices where they showed off the best of British Fascism for the World to see. A leading Fascism designer says, "You'll see this great new totally unthreatening look everywhere - Portsmouth, Dover, London. It's coming to a town near you soon, and we know where you live!"

The fact that our govt's recently have been so far behind public opinion on issues such as the Right wing's attack on lifeboatmen, is troubling. If British politicians are looking for a way to reset their relationship with the Public, they really need to pay less attention to those who moan loudest.

A short thread on “legitimate concerns”. The phrase is used repeatedly by UK government ministers. The Home Secretary is at it again this week. But only ever - as far as I can tell - in one context: people’s response to the arrival of asylum seekers. Please read whole 🧵before responding - thanks

While rightwing media nods approvingly at the prejudiced outcry in Piddington, a RNLI station has to close because of white British thuggery and threats. This is where the constantly toxic obsession with immigration leads. To racist, flag-wielding vigilantism that ruins this country for everyone.

I would love to ask a prominent BBC journalist to give me an example of an illegitimate concern. Is seems to me that it has become a question not of fact, logic, or ethics but of volume. If a big enough proportion of a village was anxious about Bigfoot or Chemtrails, BBC would cover it in a way...

This seemingly idiotic Piddington bullshit needs to be called out for what it is, rather than as some justifiable act of communal victimhood. And any responsible govt minister and media outlet would say so too. Nothing ‘legitimate’ about this. Just nasty prejudice thinking it’s got a point.
If that sounds crude, it's because the politics of this are very crude and we should be clearer about what these people are really saying.
It is essential to the anti-refugee right that asylum seekers are never presented as desperate people in need of help, but instead as an invasion force. That is where the language of fighting-age men and sexual violence comes from. We barely even notice it anymore, but our entire narrative around asylum has shifted into an invasion storyline, which even a few years ago was only heard in the wilder territories of the far right. So instead she does what Labour ministers did under Kier Starmer and will now evidently do under Andy Burnham, and pretends that all this ignorant zombified racist Facebook tosh is, in fact, reasonable and valid.
If only our problems could be solved by ushering this village out of the UK and putting it into some kind of international quarantine zone. But unfortunately, they can't, because there is nothing special about Piddington. It is consuming the same poisoned media diet as the rest of the country and parroting the same toxic lies.
It can be stopped of course. But that means we have to challenge it, rather than pay lip-service to it.

As Reform is a limited company, is the £72M a political donation or company buy-out? Do we want to live in a country where ANY party receives millions in donations? “He who pays the piper calls the tune.” Look at the USA and shudder, this is the corollary of big donor politics. Io non ci sto.

Reform has already enjoyed several years of support from a loss-making TV channel whose main function seems to be to give money and favourable coverage to its MPs. The government has done nothing about this. It's probably a more effective way of spending millions than Farage will manage.

Harborne calls his latest bung to Farage a “philanthropic gift to the country”. Philanthropy isn’t funding racists and climate deniers. Or funnelling cash into deregulation and removal of our rights so tax-avoiding billionaires can profiteer from the chaos. That’s just corruption. We don’t want it.
