painting that I sort of abandoned. deemed it overdramatic for my taste I guess. I always imagined this was a scene from early jurassic coastline. was going to add a pterosaur (Dorygnathus,Campylognathoides or Dimorphodon) there about to snatch the dragonfly, but never got around to it

Hadrosaurs: An Artistic History in Four Parts (Art by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, William Scheele, Douglas Henderson, and Andrey Atuchin)
Detail from "Cretaceous Life of New Jersey" by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. A group of green, slender-limbed Hadrosaurus with iguana-like heads and arched postured amble alongside a shoreline.A pair of noodly-necked, erect-backed Parasaurolophus with skin sails stretching from their crest to their shoulders stand in a forest. Their sails are decorated with large, round markings.A Maiasaura nesting ground cloaked in dense fog. A mixed-age group of hadrosaurs with red and cream countershading mill about in the barren landscape, variably wandering or tending to bowl-shaped nests dug into the muddy ground. Two thick-necked Edmontosaurus with large, tubular nostrils and beaky overbites drink from a river. Their necks, covered in large, subrectangular scales, are decorated with a low ridge of triangular scaly projections. They regard the viewer with a inscrutable, bird-like expressions. Behind them, numerous mayflies dance through the steamy air.

Welcome Dinodontosaurus isiyavamanda! I'm delighted to introduce you to a new species of protomammal. Hailing from the Triassic of Tanzania, this is the first record of Dinodontosaurus outside of South America, and it informs on the origin of dinosaurs. Here's a thread summarising our findings 🧵

What do you do when you have to tackle a pop culture superstar like the Allosaurus? Everyone knows it… so many people have recreated it that it’s hard to offer anything new. The solution, at least for me, is to try to do the best job possible and hope people like it

This #paleoart of #Pteranodon standing on a wave-crashed rock seems to be a favourite for some, judging by steady print sales over the last 10 years. I recall it coming together quickly, probably because I did it for my own enjoyment and fully engaged with my impulses towards romantic art.
A moody male Pteranodon longiceps, sporting an overbite and a giant, slender headcrest, stands on a dark, narrow rock amid a swirling, crashing sea. The next wave's height will reveal whether this guy is the biggest badass to ever bear membranous wings or a grade-A moron for standing on a tiny rock in such a violent sea.

It's been 90 years since the last living thylacine aka Tasmanian tiger was alive. I don't have anything profound to say, other than that Paschalis Dougalis' portrait below is a beautiful depiction #sciart
A highly detailed portrait painting of a thylacine, a dog-like carnivorous marsupial with triangular ears and large eyes, set against a soft olive-brown backdrop. Their is incredible detail in the light & depth of the large eyes and the nose. Its golden-brown fur is detailed enough it looks like you could touch it.

Another very busy week and manic #FossilFriday, so here's a drive-by new #paleoart post of Middle Jurassic British organisms: the (very poorly known) possible dryosaurid Callovosaurus, two bennettitaleans (Williamsonia and Williamsoniella), plus bonus Cladophlebis ferns. #sciart #fossils #dinosaurs
A fuzzy-bodied, scaly-tailed beaked dinosaur runs for cover amid shrubby plants. The tallest, Williamsonia hildae (centre-left), is shown in several life stages (see leaves emerging from the ground, as a single branching pair, and then again as a small tree/tall bush). The other, shrubbier species on the right is Williamsoniella coronata.

For #FossilFriday, a fashionably late post of my Musango matusadonaensis #paleoart, the first depiction of this newly-named Zimbabwean sauropodomorph. Commissioned by @profpaulbarrett.bsky.social of @nhm-london.bsky.social, Musango is known from just enough of a skeleton to attempt a reconstruction.
A mid-sized, longish-necked dinosaur crosses a drying riverbed in Triassic Zimbabwe. It rears slightly to look around, seeing sparse trees surrounded by drying mud and desiccated, collapsing riverbanks. Dead vegetation suggests a stressed habitat. (This is based on geological data, by the way, and is not a description of the European summer of 2026.)

I've recently posted new #paleoart and essays at #Patreon: a coloured version of my b+w Styracosaurus (shown here), a #specevo #pterosaur, and observations on whether the jaw fossils of Baryonyx suggest spinosaurids had lips. Check this out at www.patreon.com/markwitton.
Styracosaurus albertensis walking towards us, glancing around. On the left, a wee bird flies up to a small nest, where its mate is waiting. Hey, I found a nest similar to that on this morning's dog walk. It had fallen from a pruned tree and couldn't be repositioned, so I carried it home (which meant walking around town for 40 minutes carrying it) and placed it in a tree of the same species in our garden. Hopefully some small birds will find it and re-use it next year. We already have various tits and corvids nesting in trees outside, and I'm pretty sure sparrows nest in a neighbour's hedge. What were we talking about? Oh yeah: art and stuff. Yes, that sure is a picture of a horned dinosaur.

#SurvivingEarth E06. By talking advantage of the alienness of the creatures and the audiences' unfamiliarity with the era, it's easy to love Ordovician docus; and with peak visuals and a straightforward story, Tim Haines KNOWS how to make E06 head and shoulders above others of its kind. 9.8-9.9/10.

#SurvivingEarth not only nailed the Ordovician's alienness, but also its boundlessness. You never feel like you are watching a bleak ocean with only a few explicitly featured inhabitants. The sense of 'a wider world beyond the lens' has always been there since E01, and has benefitted E06 immensely!
