Last thought as it's getting far too late. Don't even care about spoilers as it's been decades. Citan getting his sword remains a top hype moment of my teenage years.

In life news - as it's been real quiet as of late - apparently it's time for me to learn how to use Obsidian, work with computers in ways I didn't think I'd ever do previously, and hold myself to my mantra that it's OK to change ones' views as new information comes available. No brakes. Here we go!

While it's positive that MPs appear to be finally aiming to tackle the emoto problem at the source, it's incredibly disappointing to see some still insist on calling them "illegal ebikes". To be clear. Under UK law, there is no such thing.

The stories of right-wing-favourable social media near completely drying up compared to a few days ago after the Ukrainian strikes on Russian data centres has be howling. More room in those echo chambers now that there’s so much less noise.

This gets said constantly, but it worth reiterating: Games Workshop being bigger than fishing is important to shout about because you wouldn't know it from government talking points, which are rarely about anything creative or artistic. Growth won't involve fish or steel, it will involve goblins.

When browsing in iOS increasingly more and more websites have been using JavaScript to detect DNS sinkhole blocking and then halting ALL usage of the site. Highly annoying. Upgraded to Wipr2 this morning finally after a decade on Wipr1. Problem sites are no longer a problem. £5 well spent.

Coffee thought his morning, and question asked without any sort of research before putting it out into the wild wide web: I wonder if there are statistics for how many EVs go into thermal runaway and and up being a large sized BBQ. If there are, I wonder what that % is.

Carrot Weather remains one of my favourite weather apps ever. It also has geographical challenges where it asks you to find landmarks on a map. Pretty fun. Today’s Lake Ontario challenge notes just add to the love.
Lake Ontario
Great Lakes, North America
Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes by surface area, sitting along the border between the United States and Canada.
Fun fact: Ontario the province was named after Ontario the lake, not the other way around. So renaming the lake because it sounds too Canadian is not just stupid, it's chronologically stupid.

Society (and car design) is moving on, and ironically, it’s the built environment and years of policy that lead to the prevalence of car requirements in the first place that’s causing this issue. The reality is: if you have specific requirements (home charging), you can’t live anywhere you want.

There's something amazing about being in a peloton of 40+ bikes on the cycle lane heading home. Every driver at the front of a queue of side-street traffic... every person peering out of a bus window... every passer-by gets the message: "Oh wow, yeah, people are using this stuff". Never gets old.
My view travelling home by bike: Loads of people cycling on the South City Way cycle lane on Victoria Road in Govanhill in the Southside of Glasgow, during evening rush hour. A woman in front of me wears an incredibly fetching gold coloured helmet.

The lights on Redford Road near the Dreghorn Link give safe access to the Dreghorn houses but are difficult for bicycles due to steps. Could the steep step be smoothed out for bicycle access?

In the same area could the Dreghorn Link be provided with a secure cycle lane, there is plenty of room as one lane is hardly ever used.

The footbridge over the Dreghorn Link has been closed for a long time, could this be opened to allow safe access avoiding Redford Road from Bonaly and Colinton in general.

The broken paving on the continuous footway at Dalmeny St / Leith Walk has been repaired with tarmac, undermining the whole design. It now looks like pedestrians and cyclists are crossing a road, rather than drivers crossing a continuous footway.

Keeping the economics as close to home as possible, where it directly impacts the quality of life of those who live around me. It’s not everything I can do this way obviously, but for those things that I can, I feel it’s very important. Maybe this is a hangover from the book, “How to do Nothing.”

It’s very rare that I’ll order a bag, and always prefer to go and pick it up myself. When we travel, that’s where I bring home coffee from roasters all over. Special stuff, makes it a real treat when it happens. (A privilege I admit.) Maybe it’s the “Shop Local” thing I love so much.

This morning’s coffee thought: There are roasters all over the world that coffee enthusiasts order from to try their beans. Big names. Great roasts. I have tried 8 roasters in Edinburgh, 9 including E. Lothian. The carbon footprint for shipping retail coffee all over the world must be massive.

Went on a 70km gravel/road ride winding our way to Dunbar last night with some friends, then train back. Been a hard summer - illness and life getting in the way of riding. A healing type of ride, with night riding, singletrack, and good vibes. £11 for a fish supper, that included DOUBLE FISH. 🤯

I remove QR code stickers promoting a particular dispensary that appear a few times a year at The Shore, because they plaster them on both sides of every post within a nice hour walk around town. Large, ugly, and have a vendetta as they went on the *new* tram posts where I live.

Cycling to avoid car poverty applies in London too. Making any citysafer for those who need active transport either by choice or necessity should be a higher priority in our urban areas - as well as connecting these areas together properly. Safe access to non-car infrastructure benefits all.

Agreed there is a large disproportion of spending - as well as action taken. Watching the cycling difference from when I lived there from 2016-2022, was massive. Both in speed of change, as well as increase of numbers of those riding & what they were riding.

Replace London with any UK city. Weather has less to do with active travel uptake, and safe infrastructure is everything.

The VESTAS wind-blade contract for the factory seems like it’s getting increasing support / funding, so likely seeing that getting going maybe in next couple years? I think the port is too valuable as a port to FP’s owners overall, but there’s plenty of housing planned here on periphery.

A Geo who Cycles @geocycle.eurosky.social · 17/09/2026
There’s a lot of dredging going on within the port itself as well as out by the outer berth - that’s within Forth Ports’ remit, and I assume it’s to ensure the safety of the ships. The WoL basins are owned by a private company, and legally speaking, are outwith FP’s responsibilities.

Having this discussion last night with a friend. What happened to the ultra rich just throwing money at infrastructure, civic buildings, parks, bridges, etc. and putting their name on it as a form of forever prestige - instead of hoarding / buying elections. I think about this often.

A Geo who Cycles @geocycle.eurosky.social · 17/09/2026
Wouldn’t that be quite the situation - wonder what’s going to come first: that, or stakeholders & council finally agreeing to a proper regime to dredge the basins.

We’d love to see a connected effort for water testing along the entirety of the Water of Leith - catch issues before they become too big. SEPA & Scottish Water say they have no legal remit to be doing this outside of bathing waters. Nearly 2 years of Citizen Science @ The Shore. Let’s see more.

Let’s solve this in one quick motion - UK wide. If you’re living within a city, you cannot own a car unless you have a registered place to park it. Additionally, multi-storey car-parks will be provided in dense residential areas, and public transport / active travel budgets quintupled.
110 1
A Geo who Cycles @geocycle.eurosky.social · 16/09/2026
Additionally - you’d need to widen the sea lock to fit even larger ships (the Spirit of Tasmania ships are about the literal largest you could get in), and the port is already the deepest port in Scotland. Given the engineering of the 50-year-old lock, I don’t think they’d be keen to widen it!

OT already bulldozed and planning permission in & sorted for high-rise BTR flats and ground floor retail I think. There will be a small park separating the two sites, but not sure if the full building has gone through yet - and not going to look @ planning apps on mobile 😅

Indeed it can and it does get a lot of the smaller ones. I don’t think they do any kind of immigration processing there though - and definitely not any sort of customs checks when it is in use - even w/the huge car park. 100% would love to see it though, as it would open up huge opportunities.

A Geo who Cycles @geocycle.eurosky.social · 16/09/2026
I forget where I read this, but a reason for no to other ports was due to infrastructure required for customs & immigration. Roysth has the infrastructure, but travelling there is just such a poor choice. Public transport is not clean either. Getting tourists from Europe to Leith would be the £🐄
