ARGH I KNEW THIS - this is the problem with living in Leith. Autocorrect killing me every time. Photo for proof. GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY. I love it there. I’ve fixed this before. It bit me because I was too busy enjoying my coffee. Tell Angus this remains a favourite of mine. 🙏

Showing off my Treecreeper mug that my sister in law got me. Angus Grant - made in Granton-on-Spey 🤩 Top 10 bird for me. Love this mug.
Blue and white ceramic coffee mug, sat on dark cork on an aged teak table

The mug has blue colouring on the rim, and on its face: a painted treecreeper set into the glaze. Any beverage in this vessel automatically tastes better

When browsing in iOS increasingly more and more websites have been using JavaScript to detect DNS sinkhole blocking and then halting ALL usage of the site. Highly annoying. Upgraded to Wipr2 this morning finally after a decade on Wipr1. Problem sites are no longer a problem. £5 well spent.

Carrot Weather remains one of my favourite weather apps ever. It also has geographical challenges where it asks you to find landmarks on a map. Pretty fun. Today’s Lake Ontario challenge notes just add to the love.
Lake Ontario
Great Lakes, North America
Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes by surface area, sitting along the border between the United States and Canada.
Fun fact: Ontario the province was named after Ontario the lake, not the other way around. So renaming the lake because it sounds too Canadian is not just stupid, it's chronologically stupid.

Some of our friends from Japan are visiting and staying with us, and brought me something special. If you’re a pourover geek … you know just how rare it is to have one of these in Europe right now. Hario Alpha Switch Ceramic. Saying I am STOKED to make coffee tomorrow morning is an understatement.
Me holding the beautiful matte ceramic Hario Alpha Switch pourover V60 style immersion brewer over my well loved MCM table. Overhead view of the ceramic pourover half. Beautiful edged markings that allow for the perfect extraction of everything you could ever want from a cup of coffee.

Up in Sutherland and Caithness for the week, this time without a bike (was riding the Pictish Trail last May though!) Spotted a trio of Sea Eagles(!!!) being mobbed by ravens as we got up into Kinbrace. As we were through binoculars, got a midge bite on my elbow. Sizeably ironic. Enjoy the vid!

In other interesting news - 26/03088/FUL One of the barges on The Shore wants to change from offices to a bar/restaurant, and add an extra outdoor seating area over the water. One to keep an eye on.

I’m something of an eclipse photographer myself. (Taken from The Mound as we rushed to a dinner reservation we were late to because the buses took an hour to get up from The Shore…)
Through clouded skies - the almost ring of the eclipse can be seen as a bright rune-arc shaped crescent against a backdrop of eerie yellow.

Also, Elden Ring.

Our 16 bus from The Shore that showed up after a phantom bus didn’t has been so filled with people getting on and off, and in gridlocked traffic that two other 16s have passed us. A third literally just came by as I was typing this. The trams cannot return soon enough.

Just learned about the Daihatsu Hijet Deck Van and have never has the urge to remain car-free been so waning. 660cc Kei car, 4 seater, automatic. 4wd if needed, and has a truck bed. It’s the perfect automobile in a world where life exists outside of cities as well. I will not discuss further.
An olive Kei Car on a dockside facing to the right. Beautiful tiny wheels. Spacious interior hinted at with its boxy nature. The rear has chopped off, giving way to a functional truck bed. Is sublime in nature, and its presence makes a mockery of big American Trucks and Range Rovers alike.

That was a fun raceday out yesterday. Incredibly hard, and I’m in bits today, but incredibly fun. 6am start with a wheel dip in Lake Huron, and then 14.5 hours later finishing in Ludington to beat the sunset & dip a wheel in Lake Michigan. 28°C max, and huge gravel roads. Also: Sand is hard.

Back in America for a couple weeks to see family and friends, and take on a fun Gravel Grinder race at the weekend in Michigan. Everything arrived. Yay. AirTags are neat. On I90 headed back to the family home, and it always strikes me how *hostile* the environment is with huge roads and vehicles!
My well used bright red rolling case that’s seen far too many uses & many ovens crossings, next to my bike bag housing a well packaged and intact bicycle that I brought to the states for the event. Shot taken in the OHare baggage claim area, so the scenery about as nondescript as you can imagine.

Reading through this morning’s @edinburghminute.com. This headline gave me pause. Edinburgh - cleanest city in Scotland? Maybe I’m jaded a bit from living in Japan, and then living in a well-funded London. This is NOT a high bar. Yikes.
Text reads:

Generally a big fan of the graffiti wall on Marine Parade in Leith - always new stuff going on, and I feel like the area could use some investment to make it a really special spot. That said, today, I became a huge fan. 😅 One for you, @gundampixel.bsky.social! #gundam

Me at the Meadows, helmeted and smiling. Blue tabard to indicate marshalling duties. Loads of cyclists behind ready to roll out. Looking down the Middle Meadow path, a sea of cyclists behind extending until pixels can no longer show proper resolution. What a day. 21.5 miles hiked along the Fife Coastal Path from Newburgh to Dundee. Beautiful sun, a hefty amount of tailwind, and even some sleet thrown in to keep us on our toes. 😅 Ember bus back to Edinburgh - not waiting for the train. Tomorrow. A rest and a roast dinner. 😁
Beginning archway of the Fife Coastal Path in Newburgh. Clear skies and morning sunshine. Looking East along the River Tay along the Fife Coastal Path. Inland a bit on the green pastures and rolling hills now. Mixed clouds with scattered sunshine dotting the landscape. Top of Normal Law overlooking the Tay - a white trig point in the foreground. Dundee in the far background. More blue skies and scattered clouds. Lots of wind can be seen on the water in the distance. View of the Tay Road Bridge from the Newport on Tay side looking towards Dundee. Cloudless blue sky. Golden light on the landscape. The Tay is covered in waves as a steady 20mph+ wind continues on blowing - as it had all day.

Heart rate not above 125 throughout the ride. Quick pull into Æmilia on the Porty high street for a porchetta sandwich & limonata (no need to worry about parking because BIKE!) and that’s continued to just the most lovely ride out along the water. These are healing days for sure.
My bike against a metal bench on the water’s edge looking West towards the Mussleburgh sea wall & Edinburgh. The skies match the water with a light blue of filtered sun coming from the upper left of the photo. In the far distance you can see Arthur’s seat rising at horizon’s edge. Same background scene as other photo, with the highlight being an absolutely banging porchetta sandwich in the foreground. The focaccia looks light enough to float away, and it can be confirmed that it nearly is.

9am this morning. Using the new Leith Connections to get from The Shore to Foot of the Walk by bike to commute to a meeting. One couldn’t even get onto the cycleway though, with this van blocking the entrance at the start of Leith Walk. Poor form on all accounts by the business.

Cannot get over the sheer size of the ships coming into the port these days. Those yellow transition pieces? 28m tall, 8.3m diameter, and 600 tonnes. Each. 🤯 Get to Western Harbour & Lighthouse Park over the spring when these ships are in. You will NOT be disappointed.
Wise angle shot. Calm sea. Blue skies. HUGE ship with a massive crane holding the transition pieces, loading the last one board. The disused lighthouse is to the left of the ship. Closeup of the crane apparatus. A tiny control box that fits people is dwarfed by the sheer size of everything. Closer view of Seaway7 with 5 transition pieces on board, last one about to be lifted on board.

I wish to give everyone today’s worst parking photo that I’ve seen in a long time. The absolute audacity of this. Even diners at the nearby Granery restaurant just outside shot were laughing in disbelief with me. Hazards on. Driver can be seen kitty-corner about to cross back. Words fail. 🤯

Some morning zen, brought to you by Leith Connections.
My gravel bike, morning sun rising in the back left to cloudless blue skies.

It’s against a bollard with a bicycle lane indicator. The stone setts forming the new separated cycleway over the Sandport Bridge on The Shore form the ground cover curving up with the Shore’s buildings in the background. Golden light everywhere.

The crankset is not level, nor are the valves perpendicular to the ground - an obvious omission in which the photographer says is due to the fact that this is actually a decently busy cycle way at times, and he didn’t want to impede anyone with the photo op.

A reminder to other cycling orientated folks out there as we start edging closer to Spring: 1. When was the last time you topped up your tubeless sealant? 2. When was the last time you checked your brake pads? Some quick maintenance this afternoon to address both these questions. 😁

Left ones are decent, some life left.

Used up all the sunlight today and it was absolutely stunning out. The Water of Leith was decently high after the rain, and flowing quickly. A half dozen dipper PAIRS were spotted, a single Kingfisher, and too many songbirds to count. Bonus appearance bid a fox at Murrayfield. 10/10 day!
Lovely part of the Water of Leith on a rocky beach, looking down stream. Sunlight filtering through the trees. Imagine the blue flash of a kingfisher zooming down the way, as that’s what happened not long after this picture was taken. Flowy turbulent water with two dippers perched on rocks standing amidst the large-in-comparison rapids. One dipper at the top of the frame, the other at the bottom. A fox amongst the elder ivy growing in the bank opposite Murrayfield. It looks like it has just awoken from a nap with the bleary eyed stare it’s giving.

I'm through this exact spot often on a bike. The photo was familiar, but something was off. There isn't a floating bus stop there. This LOOKS like a precarious position for a pedestrian to attempt to board a bus, but it's not a place to do it. That situation doesn't even exist on current roads.
Google street view showing the same space as the headline photo in the article, this one taken October 2025. There is no pedestrian crossing lines, and the bike land has been updated a bit more. There is no floating bus stop anywhere near this space, as the photo in the article shows a pedestrian crossing a bike lane straight towards a bus - which insinuates that this is how floating bus stops work, when in reality none of them look like this and are much safer.

It was a very Merry Christmas Dawn Patrol yesterday morning. 8 of us met up for the usual route, added a side quest for a great zip line and some swings, and still finished bout 7:30 for some outdoor coffee outside our fav cafe as they were (quite rightly!) closed for the holidays. 10/10 Patrol.
Edinburgh Dawn Patrol, still an hour before sunrise, on Xmas morning outside of Cairngorm coffee. Big smiles for the cyclists pictured, due to good ride, good people, and of course some nice camp-stove made outdoor coffee made at the end.

Ad for a MiniCooper. A giant round iPad style touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard. Bigger than the steering wheel. The speedometer says 0mph but we all know the likelihood of the driver reaching for this when stopped instead of while driving is roughly the same 0.

103 miles yesterday with the Wintersmith Audax + riding from Edinburgh to Galashiels. ~2340m of climbing. Really worked on “audax pace” and felt amazing at the end, and given enough light and more time - could’ve easily carried on. The rain gave way to beautiful golden light. 10/10 day. 🤩
My bike. Pre dawn. Gumwall wide tyres looking brilliant in the low light.

It’s against some old tractor tyres blocking off a road. Front light shining on the long grass, red hue cast upon the white frame from the rear lights of my riding mates. Dreich photo somewhere between Kelso and Selkirk in the borders. Grey skies, low clouds, wet roads, and me in a black and yellow rain jacket in the middle distance as the long road rises up towards the rolling hills. Bonus gravel section from the Audax. Wet, muddy, puddly road between the hedges. Golden light starting to shine through blue skies and white clouds.

Two cyclists in the far distance, having suffered a puncture, stopped to fix before carrying on. Smiling me selfie style. Golden light. Blue skies. Riding along a damp road with trees and a hedge in the background. Helmet, lensss tinted, smile shining.

I’m obviously proud of my latest kit purchase, a thick fleecy red flannel jersey. I look rather dashing in it if I do say so myself. The beard adds a lumberjack vibe.
