Some viruses appear to vanish when outbreaks dissipate, only to emerge again. Scientists don’t always know which animals they lurk in — and how to stop them from spilling back over.

Just emailed this...
Dear Director Bhattacharya and Deputy Director Lorsch:

I noticed that the NOFO
Mechanistic Toxicology of METALS: Metal Exposure, Transport, Action, Localization, and Susceptibility (RP1 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
is on the Grants.gov forecasted site.

https://simpler.grants.gov/opportunity/2b9da5ac-c1a1-4a64-ac18-4c707c6925ed

The estimated post date is December 4th, 2026 with an estimated application due date of January 5th, 2027.

I know that you have expressed concerns about reduced trust in NIH and in high administrative burden. Having a new NOFO with relatively little public background or process with a 1-month period for application preparation over the holiday season is not an even remotely reasonable way to solicit the best scientific projects, puts a substantial burden on investigators and offices of sponsored research, and reeks of a setup for funding a targeted set of investigators who may be receiving inside knowledge about this initiative.

Certainly you can do better than this; NIH certainly did when I was employed there (and for many years before and after).

Sincerely,

Jeremy M. Berg

I know you're not allowed to say this during the current debate, but the reason the left dominates academics, art, comedy, and music is that the right has stupid, discredited ideas, they're not funny, and dull resentment does not make for good art. No grand conspiracy required.

He was born in US, educated at Bloomfield Hills Andover, where he captained football team; Univ of Mich; Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar; Columbia, where he earned an MD. Debate his views, not whether he’s a “real” American.

Cape Verde lost on Friday, but won the respect of just about every soccer fan on the planet. We have recently clarified our penalties for this. If a submission contains incontrovertible evidence that the authors did not check the results of LLM generation, this means we can't trust anything in the paper. 3/

The penalty is a 1-year ban from arXiv followed by the requirement that subsequent arXiv submissions must first be accepted at a reputable peer-reviewed venue. 4/

Examples of incontrovertible evidence: hallucinated references, meta-comments from the LLM ("here is a 200 word summary; would you like me to make any changes?"; "the data in this table is illustrative, fill it in with the real numbers from your experiments") end/"
