There should be a law against setting off fireworks outside of actual Firework Night. Walking the dogs early evening and they go off in our own street while heading back. So my dogs absolutely terrified but I have to force them towards what they fear in order to get them home safe.

I've been around dogs all my life & seen the trouble they can get themselves into. This morning was a first. Dolly found her way into dads old shed & into an old glue pot. Her leg got covered in leaves & plastic. Got the debris off before thought of taking a picture. The glue itself took longer.

Rewatched Man About The House (1974) movie the other week when Richard O'Sullivan died. It's a bit slow going at times & doesn't do the show justice which I remember fondly. The only real highlight of the film is the cameo from Spike Milligan playing himself & obviously improvising. #film #movies

Discworld QOTD, from Mort
The only thing known to go faster than ordinary light is monarchy, according to the philosopher Ly Tin Wheedle. He reasoned like this: you can't have more than one king, and tradition demands that there is no gap between kings, so when a king dies the succession must therefore pass to the heir instantaneously. Presumably, he said, there must be some elementary particles -- kingons, or possibly queons -- that do this job, but of course succession sometimes fails if, in mid-flight, they strike an anti-particle, or republicon. His ambitious plans to use his discovery to send messages, involving the careful torturing of a small king in order to modulate the signal, were never fully expanded because, at that point, the bar closed.

Rewatched Carrie (1976). Not seen it for many years and it really does hold up as one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King book. Sissy Spacek is great at the title character and the directing is so good. Everyone around her is so awful you can't help but be on her side. #horror #film #movies.

Discworld QOTD, from Wintersmith
It was lonely on the hill, and cold. And all you could do was keep going. You could scream, cry, and stamp your feet, but apart from making you feel warmer, it wouldn’t do any good. You could say it was unfair, and that was true, but the universe didn’t care because it didn’t know what “fair” meant. That was the big problem about being a witch. It was up to you. It was always up to you.

I grew up in the wake of the moon landings so saw a lot of footage as my first images on TV. So when I saw vapour trails in the sky going up I assumed it was a rocket taking off. I was just a pre-school kid. Yet that still makes more sense than the chemtrail idiocy that some grown adults believe.

This months cult calendar poster is for Invasion of the Saucer Men (1957), which I also watched for the first time this week. Typical 50's sci-fi, bad script, not much action, poorly made aliens, annoying teens. Though the highlight is a young Frank Gorshin in an early role.

Discworld QOTD, from Men at Arms
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.
Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars.
Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.
But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.
This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.
