The Liberals and Conservatives teamed up again today — funny how that keeps happening — to get Bill C-39 over the hurdle of its first vote. The massive, 243-page bill bulldozes environmental protections, Indigenous rights and attacks the right to strike. Here's what this means:

Voting is only possible at election time. Direct action can be applied all year round. Voting is only useful for addressing whatever topics are in the candidates' current political agendas. Direct action can be applied in every aspect of life. Unlike elections, direct action is under your control.

Once again, anarchists are in the news and there is confusion about what "anarchism" is. Anarchists oppose all forms of domination—every mechanism that imposes disparities in wealth and power, that prevents us from fulfilling our potential on our own terms. Anarchy is the opposite of autocracy. 🏴

I grew up & live in South Woodham Ferrers, a town created in the '70s based on the Essex Design Guide. I even own the guidebook on how they planned it. The guide is designed better than the town. Jonathan Meades called the town saccharine and mimsy. Many of our roads are named after Middle-earth.

We really need to stop acting like we can shame, logic, and argue our way out of the situation we’re in. A lot of people are essentially saying “but that’s illegal and unfair!” to a mugger taking their wallet. You have to reframe your expectation that this is all a courtroom with an impartial jury.

this is not a problem you can fix with calm, reasoned debate. you can't even fix it by improving people's lives with policy. there is no clear, proven, non-violent solution to this issue. finding one is the most significant problem of our age.

Nat Turner was a terrorist. At least, that's what they'd expect the Black community to call him if it were today. He was born October 2, 1800....or 236 years ago today. And somehow they expected a man born enslaved to never want to rebel. To escape. To take revenge.
Four books with Nat Turner as the subject. Left to right, top to bottom.

1. Ten Black Writers Respond to William Styron's "Confessions."

2. The Confessions of Nat Turner by William Styron

3. Nat Turner's Slave Rebellion by Herbert Aptheker.
