The nitty-gritty: A driving narrative, gut-wrenching emotion and plenty of horrors, both human and supernatural, make Crone a standout book of 2026. I’m not sure what I was expecting when I picked up Crone, but it wasn’t at all what I got! And that isn’t a bad thing. This is my first time reading Keith Rosson, so perhaps I would have been better prepared if I’d read one of his earlier books, but wow, this guy can write.

Saturday: a cup of coffee, rereading the end of The Ninth Rain so I can carry on with the trilogy, and listening to the audiobook of Lucas Jones’s powerful collection of poetry. My dad passed recently, so Lucas’s verse is hitting a little differently than it did when I first started reading it.
Two books rest on a dark tabletop beside a white Thea Gilmore mug on a coaster. The mug features a stylised sunrise design and the words “I WAKE UP DREAMING”, with “THEA GILMORE” printed beneath. In the foreground, I Still Believe in Miracles (Poems to Find Meaning in Difficult Times) by Lucas Jones lies on top of The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams, whose blue and black cover illustration of a large bird is partially visible. A pink bestseller sticker and matching page tab stand out against the books, creating a cosy reading scene.

This may get me in trouble - it’s easier to imagine the past - and harder to imagine a vastly different future. Being shown on screen does the hard-work. Popular SF seems mostly be easily imagined or linked to a visual IP.

Science fiction is currently roughly six percent of the current fiction market in North America and fantasy is (again, roughly) four times that. There's definitely more money in fantasy. In all genres, I will note, the money is very unequally distributed. (Horror... fluctuates)

Being able to write a romance in a novel is not the same thing as being able to write a romance novel, though. One is a plot point. The other is working within a genre space with established market expectations.

My weird girl lit novel got a STARRED REVIEW in Publishers Weekly! 🤩 "Using aliens to explore alienation, SHE ISN'T HERSELF TONIGHT brilliantly turns abduction narratives on their heads. Piper continues to outdo herself.“ out October 27 from Saga! 🛸 www.publishersweekly.com/9781668077122
She Isn’t Herself Tonight
Hailey Piper. Saga, $18 trade paper (256p) ISBN 978-1-6680-7712-2
The latest foray into supernatural horror from Bram Stoker award winner Piper (A Game in Yellow) offers an enthralling twist on the classic alien abduction plot. At age 30, Rabbit (a reclaimed childhood nickname) is eagerly awaiting the return of the aliens, or “Guests,” as she refers to them, that first came for her at age 10 and then again at age 20. She has never felt truly understood, not by her mother, who paraded her around local churches as a child to tell the story of her first abduction—substituting the aliens for angels—nor her recent ex-boyfriend, Leo, who accused her of being “too much work.” As she reels from the breakup, she takes comfort in knowing that the “Guests,” the only ones who have ever made her feel safe and cared for, will be returning soon. Piper mines a lot of tension from Rabbit’s yearning for her abductors, making readers just as anxious for their arrival as Rabbit herself, even as, in the meantime, Rabbit’s body undergoes a mysterious, possibly extraterrestrial transformation. Using aliens to explore alienation, this brilliantly turns abduction narratives on their heads. Piper continues to outdo herself. Agent: Lane Heymont, Tobias Literary. (Oct.)
