Most of us are blind to how much unnatural levels of browsing by grazers impact the landscape. Not only by shaving vast areas bare, but shaping what survives. On this young oak that somehow managed to 'get away', for eg, the browse line is clear. There's an omnipresent, invisible strimmer at work.

So demoralising. And the timing is such that the council are right now also asking community artists to bid for tourist tax funding. Why can't they instead see the scale of this, and direct that funding to preserving this space for the groups who are already there, or funding a new space for them?

I agree with this. It would be politically hard. That would explain why PM Burnham is feeling his way too, I guess. But, tied down with good governance, if the UK seems to want it, I'd say go for it. I'm confident it's available in a way Extrawurst deals are not. 1

The rush to speculate that asylum seekers are responsible for every crime in the news is a sort of opportunistic informational terrorism. Until it’s disproved it stokes fear and hatred. When it is disproved there are no adverse consequences and they know that they only have to be lucky once.
