I’ve reached the point - well actually, I reached it a while ago - where I’m militantly anti-AI. Fine - use it in bioscience labs and radiology where it might help analyse data more effectively. Use it sparingly for systems engineering. Everywhere else, it can fuck off.

Our new paper is accepted in A&A! 🧪☀️☄️ How much has the Sun's energy output changed since the 1600s? Different reconstructions of total solar irradiance (TSI) have yielded different estimates. In our new study, we reconcile these reconstructions and explain why they differ. doi.org/10.1051/0004...
Plot showing long-term total solar irradiance (TSI) reconstructions covering the period since 1600.
The top panel shows the major TSI reconstructions available by 2025 (displaying only the latest version of each model family, except for Hoyt and Schatten, for which the 1993 version is shown). These reconstructions exhibit substantial differences, with variations of about 5 W m−2 between models during the Maunder Minimum.

The bottom panel shows the current state of TSI reconstructions, including the updated CHRONOS, Penza, and Hoyt–Schatten models. These recent reconstructions consistently indicate a relatively small secular trend, although uncertainties remain regarding its exact magnitude.
