From glass beads and lunar map to #Mercury: New study indirectly determines SiO2-content of Mercury’s surface. With 37 %, it is less abundant than thought. Mercury’s crust must have formed by extreme volcanism. www.mps.mpg.de/mercury-s-cr... @uni-muenster.de @uni-goettingen.de @renggli.bsky.social
Three steps to Mercury. Step 1: Using laboratory measurements, the researchers established a relationship between infrared radiation and SiO2 content. Step 2: They verified this relationship using measurement data from the Moon and lunar samples. Step 3: Using infrared data from Mercury, the researchers were then able to determine the SiO2 content of Mercury’s surface.

Different #meteorites, same birthplace: The parent bodies of different groups of #CarbonaceousChondrites may have formed in the same region of the #SolarSystem. Published today in #TheAstrophysicalJournal: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3... More here: www.mps.mpg.de/different-me...
Just outside Jupiter’s orbit, a ring-shaped region of high gas pressure formed. In this “dust trap,” over several million years planetesimals of varying compositions were able to form. Different groups of carbonaceous chondrites (here CO, CV, CM, TL, CI, and CR) can be traced back to different generations of planetesimals that formed over the course of about two million years. They differ in their proportions of fine-grained material (shown here in blue) and inclusions (shown here in brown).

#Solar #prominences are huge, beautiful structures in the #corona. Some are stable for weeks relying on constant replenishing of fresh material. A study published today in @natastron.nature.com explores their “supply logistics”: www.nature.com/articles/s41.... More: www.mps.mpg.de/solar-promin... ☀️🔭
The new computer simulations are based on a magnetic field structure that is often associated with prominences: the magnetic field lines in the corona form a double arc with a small dip in the middle. As the calculations show, the flame-like prominence forms in this dip and remains trapped there. All relevant layers of the Sun were taken into account, from the corona, the Sun’s outer atmosphere, to parts of the convection zone below the Sun’s surface.A sequence of images from the new computer simulations. The flame-like prominence extends up to about 20,000 kilometers into the corona and constantly changes shape. Occasionally, some of its material “rains” back down into the Sun’s lower-laying layers (image D).
